It is tough when you keep churning out good content (whatever that is) but see no results of your hard work.
This is the story of most plankton and minnows on the platform. We’ve all seen well written posts (including our own posts) on steemit that get 8 upvotes, 0 comments and that famous $0.00 payout.
Life as a small fish can be challenging in Steemit waters but we have our strengths too! I know as a small fish I can be more agile than big guys, I can try different things without getting too much negative feedback, people can’t accuse me of bringing down the steem price because of something I said, and I know the platform needs us plankton and minnows too, even though it doesn’t look like it!
So taking advantage of what we have going for us as minnows and plankton, I think it is time for us to:
- Regroup
- Make a new plan
- Execute
- Review
So how do we regroup?
Well, we are doing it here in these posts. We are coming together to discuss minnow challenges and to change the status quo.
Make a new plan
So we know if we keep doing what we’ve always done, we’ll keep getting the same results! So what can we do differently?
- Know thy follower
- Read and respond to every comment you receive on your posts!
- Upvote comments on your posts
- Check out at least one of your followers’ blogs every day
So I have over 300 followers but I don’t think I’ve ever gotten even one third of them to upvote any of my posts - so what is going on? Who are these followers and why are they not voting for our posts?
One thing every Steemit user (big or small) should do is to try and get to know the people who are following them.
That’s right! You are never too big to take the time to learn more about the people who follow you! So get started right away :)
Ways to get to know your follower?
This one is quite self explanatory - when people comment on your posts, don't ignore them!
I know so many established bloggers on Steemit who do not upvote well written intelligent comments on their posts - this can be very disheartening for minnows and planktons who showed you their support! Be generous to those who take the time and upvote/comment on your posts! - I cannot emphasise this one enough. Please don’t be stingy!
Upvote their post (it must not be spam of course) and leave them a positive comment! There is nothing sweeter than having people who I follow drop by my little blog, upvote it and leave a comment. I feel loved and it is important to pass that love down the line!
Execute
There is no point in making new plans if we don't execute them.
So how I will support my followers?
- I will make it a habit to visit the blogs of at least seven of my followers each week. Starting with one blog every day for the next seven days, I will read and upvote their post and leave a positive comment to encourage them. This is obviously in addition to doing my usual rounds on blogs of people I am already following on steemit :)
- I will read, upvote and respond to every comment on this post (excluding spammers). I already do this but I will add it here still as a reminder.
- I will resteem posts from my followers that I think deserve more views. I am not a big fish but I will do everything in my Steem power to support you ;)
Review - Let’s see what happens when we start supporting each other in the community!
Until next time - keep on swimming!
If you just stumbled upon this post and want to know where it all started, please feel free to browse through my previous post:
1. Advice from one minnow to another
This is true. People tend to engage with those who engage with them. For a writer, this is key.
Good to see you @patriamreminisci
Yes, we certainly need to engage with people who are willing to give us their time and attention! How are you enjoying steemit? I stopped by your blog and I was really impressed :) You do put in a lot of work and I hope you get all the support from the community to keep up your good work.
xx Lucy
i think that you have your priorities right on here. Its very important to get the basics right when you are starting off. Post good content, interact and share with your followers.
It's fine for the whales to jerk each other off because they have the power to do it. It's the same with governments and big corporations.
The difference here is that we can change the outcome. The more minnows that grow and support each other then the more of the reward pool that we will share. Unless you are willing to buy 100k of STEEM then it is going to take effort to grow your account. Most of the whales are there because they joined so early that STEEM was really cheap and not many people were involved in the reward pool.
That is gradually changing. It would be massively expensive to buy whale status and there are so many users that you need a lot of votes to claim from the rewards. So every day the whales are getting less and less.
All you need to do is grow an active and loyal following so that you can keep catching up.
Thank you for your words of encouragement @niallon11 I truly appreciate it!
I truly hope I am doing the right thing here :)
You are absolutely right that most people on the platform can't afford to buy 100k of STEEM but we can all work together to grow each other. We do need each other unlike whales (who think that they don't need anyone else). Thank you so so much for your comment and upvote. It really means alot to this minnow.
xx Lucy
Ha ha, I love this, and totally agree with everything you said Lucy.
As for the big fish not up-voting stuff, sadly they don't, because they all belong to bots, and the bots give them what they want, so they don't bother.
Plus, the word on the street is, is that they save all their Steem power for all their other whale buddies... one big circle jerk!
Here is a good post with statistics regarding voting power distribution and membership
Maybe the balance is tilting slightly away from whales
https://steemit.com/steem/@taskmaster4450/huge-loss-in-whale-power-a-6-month-view-distribution-is-really-changing-facts-on-paid-bots-too
I just read this, and it made me really hopeful for the future of Steemit!
My concern is with dead fish.
Could it be that the life cycle of a steemian is relative short?
Could it be that people:
sign up
try to do what they can
get bored
give up
????
Could all of us fall pray to this pattern?
Well, you tell me brother, if you signed up for the first time a few days ago, when Steemit was absolute shit... would you have stuck around?
No.
But 687,721 dead fish did not wash off on the beach a few days ago.
I would be curious to know what the typical life span of these carcases was.
If it is over one month or whatever time is required to figure out what’s going on, then it is possible that the life cycle I am proposing is a big factor. And if it is a big factor, what does that bode for the future of the platform?
Ahh, I hear ya, and some of them are probably duplicate accounts that were tossed away over time I would imagine.
I think it is certainly very easy to give up when you don't get any traction on the platform and that is the reason I think we need to support the each other and newbies. What a lot people seem to miss is that steem is worth nothing if people don't use the steem blockchain and that is why it is in everyone's interest to support others in the community stay here stay active :)
I thought your approach has so much value I put your summary in my quote blog.
I hope many more here adopt this approach. It amazes me how many big fish reply to good posts but they never upvote.
It is good sign indeed :)
I think steemit is much like real life where a handful of people control most of the wealth and have the power to impact the lives of majority of users ;) I will be really pleased to see a little less whale power :)
I don't think that will happen. People don't like giving up power.
I think if we work and support each other that we could affect a balance of power. I don't think it's a matter of them giving up power. It is more finding a better balance within Steemit.
lol! Bots certainly rule here and I am not sure if the founders intended it to be this way (I hope not because that'll be some twisted thinking).
We really need to encourage more human engagement on the platform or it will become a big pile of rubbish posts powered by bots ;)
I think the word on the street sounds quite true (I have observed it on hundred dollar votes going to really silly posts with five or six words!).
Yep, and after the recent 3 day slow down glitch, I teamed up with a bot too, just to earn during times where I can't do anything on the platform, which I consider a fail-safe... so I guess I'm part of the problem now as well, but will be buying more Steem over the weeks to come, which will be used strictly on my following. 🐳
Noooo @tolkatore you moved to the dark side ;) lol!
I think it was probably the right thing to do as you can get some decent return on your investment and in the end of the day that is really important as well. I think you are very good to everyone so I wouldn't worry too much about anything. You keep up your good work :)
It's Minnow Booster, so I don't think it's a bad bot, and it goes to a good cause, but I just couldn't stand not being able to make anything for almost 3 days, at least now, the bot will at least make sure that I make something when Steemit is at a standstill, or I go on vacation.
Great advice, I never thought about upvoting a persons comment but I can definitely see how that would be encouraging. I enjoy these advice blogs. I don't think I even have 2 weeks here yet and always finding some good tips, thanks!
Thank you @jmido8 :)
I am glad you found something useful in this post! It is really important to upvote people who take the time to comment on our posts as that is how most minnows and planktons make some SP on steemit :)
See you around xx
I love this Lucy. More people should adopt these courtesies.
“The way to be happy is to make others so”

I’m resteeming this post.
Thank you so much for your kind words and support @appone
It seems a lot people agree with it but we still don't see that much of it in practice! All fins crossed, lets hope we can influence a bit of culture change on the platform :)
Excellent write up. i love this
Thank you @g-beng :)
Hey, Lucy! May I translate this post and the previous one into Spanish? I think it contains valuable information that should be known in the language of Cervantes as well. :D :D Of course, you will have the respective credit.
Hey @guilleoro go right ahead and show us your Spanish magic ;)
I would love to see it! Spread the love.
xx Lucy
Good! I'll get to work on that this very afternoon! ;)
Awesome :)
The translation is ready! You can see it when you like. ;)
Glad to see Part 2 out :) This one was very helpful as well! I like the idea of really trying to get to know your followers. And I love the tip of responding to everyone who comments on your posts, I think that is very important!
Hey Jenna, good to see you again :)
Thank you so much for your kind words. I am a little slow in responding to all my comments right now because I want to upvote with 100% SP (with Steem price being so low right now I feel sad not being able to give a double digit upvote, lol). I am trying though! May the steem force be with us :)
That's very thoughtful of you! I forgot to thank you for sharing your rewards, I really appreciate it :)
May the steem force be with us ;)
Hola @lucygarrod, mejor descrito nunca!!! Saludos
Gracias por sus amables palabras @a1000carv
¡Realmente lo aprecio!

I think you're on the right track. As of this morning I have been a little plankton floating through the waters for 92 days. I've hit 298 followers and a reputation of 39.9. I am more proud of my rep than anything else so far. Because that does show, I have been interacting and sharing. Currently I get about 6 votes 2 of them are auto from 2 groups I belong to (no pay out though) It's meant to help newbies like us get exposure..... my highest payout (going off of memory was .80) I keep it up at that rate, I can quit my job in 100 years :P
Number of followers is only relevant if they're engaged with you. If they aren't...then they need to be thrown back into the pond. I think that is going to be my goal for the week is going through my followers, see what needs to be weeded out (put the ones I want to 'remove' on mute as a way to see what I've gone over). Then be more active with the ones that I decide to keep. Keep building a supportive community.
I did find out from someone I chat with regularly to upvote first then comment....I'll find the comment and post it. It was a good reason.
One of the groups I did join since it started wast #newbieresteemday. There are a lot of really great people in the group. I am feeling a bit lost in it though. Not sure why.
I really do believe you hit he nail on the head @lucygarrod. Let's see what kinda waves we can make :D
Hey @tryskele good to hear from you again! It sounds like you've got a good plan to go through your followers list and engage with them.
Thank you so much for your kind words. It really means a lot to me. I am slow in responding to comments right now because I want to give all comments the biggest vote possible but it just takes so long for SP to renew that I have to wait a day before it is back to full power lol (not that my vote is that big even then, lol)
xx Lucy
No worries. I usually can only get on when I get home from work which is when everyone else it getting up for work. The votes are great and I appreciate them. But to me there's isn't a hurry in anything. I think I'm probably as happy if not more so when someone responds t me LOL .
You are a star @tryskele!
Thank you so much for being kind and understanding!
xx Lucy
What better way to support people than being understanding of their situations. I admire that you're trying to give everyone the best possible vote. I can't think of anyone on here that does that.
I truly love the community and getting to know people who are like minded. Want to build others up as well as themselves. They're not in it just from a greed aspect.
Those are some great points. I have seen many come and go just since I have been on Steemit, I believe that I started May 2017. It was good then I had several posts go to the trending page and not I an lucky to get a dollar or two on posts. Yes, sometimes I get lucky but not that often. We will just have to keep on posting and gaining SP and I hope it gets better soon. I have heard there have been some changes to Steemit and more changes to come, not sure what, when or where yet, but they are coming. I want to also say Thank You as I did not expect to see what I did in memo.
:) Thank you so much! I have only been on the platform since last year September and even in this short space of time I've seen quite significant changes. I hope the changes to Steemit are for better. All fins crossed :)
xx Lucy
I am no longer a minnow, but what you write is very sound advice.
One other big piece of advice I would give is .... keep posting regularly. Every day if possible.
Steem is all about visibility.
And it is all about networking.
Thank you so much for taking the time to read this little minnow's post @pennsif :)
I truly appreciate your advice and guidance. I will definitely try to implement it and also share it with others in the community in my next post!
Love reading your blogs and the sense of togetherness you have with your content! I'm glad you mentioned having an action plan but also executing it. It's all well and good having a plan but if you don't put it to action, nothing will happen!
You're right, getting to know your followers and commenters is important but I also see a lot of re-steems on my feed which can clog things up but then at the same time, it can lead to an interesting trail to someone else's profile.
I think there's a balance between resteeming and commenting to spamming, a very fine balance but it's better to be seen doing than doing nothing in this guy's opinion!
Hey Nicky :)
Thank you so much for your kind words. Yes, there is certainly no point if we don't have any action plan. I know what you mean about resteem clogging up your blog and I used to worry about it in the past but not so much anymore. I once read a post by @jerrybanfield about how resteeming is actually very important form of giving on the platform and you should try to balance posting your own content whilst resteeming other people's posts to support them too!
I agree there is certainly a balance between commenting to spam and commenting to show your appreciation or add to the discussion. I would never support commenting to spam - those ones that go something like: "nice post sir, please upvote and follow back" - no no no :) but sometimes I just like to say thank you to an author and I don't see anything wrong with that either!
xx
Yes I try to re-steem if I think the content is good for sure but as I only get a chance to log in to the platform at weekends, I only post something once per week (the nature of my job) so I am definitely a quality over quantity person (my blog I uploaded yesterday took 8 hours to write lol).
Yea that whole "nice post, follow me" commenting can just be left alone :)
Thank you for the unexpected gift :)
Very well said.
I am gonna start to visit my followers blogs now.
We should help each other.
Wonderful idea and resteeming it for others too :)
Thank you so much @aniketmore1925
That's great! I am really glad we can create some ripples of happiness in steemit waters.
PS - Thank you resteem too!
Looking at the positives! The best approach. I realise I'm not going to hit it big on here any time soon, I just can't give it the time needed at the moment. So regrouping is really pertinent advice. I'm setting up votes for the community members that are so supportive, for when I can't get on, and posting what is important to me when I can get on.
I totally get you @minismallholding
I am also not able to give it the time needed to establish myself here. These little posts are more about us coming together from around the world and making some new friends without too much worry about the financial return (as you can see this post hasn't even made a dollar ;) ).
Looking forward to seeing more of you in future xx
Well said.
I find it quite amusing when people complain about getting no votes or feed back and when I have a look at their outgoing votes on Steemreports, they've cast 10 votes in 7 days and a third of them for themselves.
A little reciprocity makes the world go around.
Can you vote for yourself? Eek. I couldnt do that.. seems wierd and dishonest! Seems the steemit principle should be to help others but more often than not it seems to be every man for himself. Maybe I am just feeling despondant and alone... 😓😓😓
Yes indeed, you can upvote yourself 'til your finger is sore but it just won't give you the same warm fuzzy feeling you'll get by sharing with some other lonely and despondent Steemian.
Your comment made me laugh so much @deirdyweirdy :)
I can just see it in my head someone upvoting furiously for themselves until they are exhaused.
Keep up the good spirits and thank you for being so awesome!
xx Lucy
Crying into my fishy coffee... 🐟🐟🐟
Thank you so much @deirdyweirdy :)
lol! I agree it is really amusing when people behave selfishly without seeing anything wrong in their own behaviour. Reciprocity certainly makes the world go round. It is funny that on a platform like @steemit where it is easier to be generous people still behave with lack mentality. However, as they say "Be the change you want to see" so we can only focus on ourselves and hopefully more people will join in and make a difference :)
Thank you for the love and support, I will come visit you soon xx
Absolutely, all you can do is try to spread the love and hope that people will pass a bit of it forward.
Thank you for the post, to be honest I was feeling a little discouraged after writing post after post with no feedback.
I will keep going!
Thanks again.
Hey @rhyscn it is certainly not easy on this platform.
We do need the support of others and that is what these posts are all about. It is about us coming together and doing something different which is supporting each other.
Please keep going and do not be discouraged. It will change. Try some of the things I plan to do myself and see if you see some positive results xx
It's really disheartening when you almost put great efforts into your post and no one notices it. But like what you have said, we have to support each other in one way or another. Thank you for this post, it's very motivational :)
Thank you @nickeychan :)
I am so happy to hear from you again! How are you enjoying @steemit?
Yes, we keep supporting each other and keep on swimming xx
I like it! It's like going back to the old times when I used to write a lot. Although, I don't know what to post at times. Hehe. Like dory from finding nemo said, "just keep swimming!"
Yes we are like like Dory and Nemo (little fish in big steemit ocean) ;)
xx Lucy
Been new here, but don't remember Facebook calling its users Minnows, Whales and Plankton. If nothing else, that on its own and the opportunity to get paid for posting makes Steemit innovative.
Hey @mynlo.com welcome to the community :)
Yes, steemit is quite different from facebook (much better community) and the reward system certainly makes it much more competitive than other social media. With all the privacy breach scandle on facebook I think more people will move towards steemit :) (all fins crossed).
Hope to see more of you around.
xx Lucy
Thanks! Will try to be here around.
I try to reply to every comment I get, even if it takes me a day or two to get to them. The conversation is part of the fun! And I always make sure I have VP to upvote them, as tiny as my upvote is.
I like to cruise my list of followers because I find new people to follow!
Thank you for stopping by @powellx5
I am trying to do the best I can with my tiny vote as well :)
I stopped by your blog yesterday, absolutely loved it! it was really fun
xx Lucy
Thanks! 😁
Its an great initiative to start to help minnows dwell. So heres my part a vote to you.
Thank you so much @faizan07 :)
I truly appreciate your support.
Thanks so much for your support. I remember my first post (the introduce yourself one) that you voted and commented. It was really encouraging to see your friendly words. Keep up the good work and be as generous as possible :-)
Hey Vari,
Thank you so much girl! That's really kind of you.
How is Posy doing? I wish you guys were near to me so I could give some cuddles to your fluffy child :)
xx Lucy
Sounds like a plan. :)
:) I want to know if you implement it!
xx Lucy
I've already started implementing some things, I will let you know how I make out overtime :)
My trouble with voting is I do it way too much. I want to vote on comments and posts constantly. Sadly I have to be at 100 for the vote to not be goose eggs.
I am in agreement on commenting getting to know a few people takes time. Repeated interaction is the only way. No shortcuts for that one
I know what you mean @headchange
It is really challenging because I want to give full power vote to everyone but it takes so darn long to renew the SP and even then the vote isn't worth that much! I just want the steem price to get to a $1000 so we can make it rain ;)
xx Lucy
Oh no! not until I have a chance to buy a bit first. There are so very many I am running into who really deserve a good vote. If I build up SP this place could be ever so much fun. It is slow but we will both grow over the summer I am sure of it.
an encouraging article. i like it. They do not read a lot of people.earn their aim money
Thank you @fidofinans :)
Looking forward to seeing more of you around.
xx Lucy
thank you garrod :) good luck
I enjoy reading your post. I used to think of myself as a plankton. Now, I am thinking close to dead fish. :)
I do try to do most of the things you recommend. Do check out my blog and comment. I guarantee I will resond.
I feel like a dead fish too right now! 😓😓😓
Hey @rajbeekie don't lose hope! I will certainly try to stop by as soon as I get a chance :)
I look forward to seeing more of you around
xx Lucy
I think this sounds like a good strategy, commenting and replying. It has been working fairly well for me.
Discord was certainly a boost but then it became a total time-trap...
Leaving your own blog to visit the steemians that visit you and comment and upvote the articles they made that you like, also maybe give feedback on the things you don't like or don't agree with...
Using bots in an "ethical way", is a great way to get more exposure.
Good luck!
Thank you for your kind words @friendly-fenix
I haven't really figured out Discord yet! I better do it soon, I think.
I am wondering if I should use bots for these posts or not - As I share the SBD I make from these "Advice" posts with people who upvote them, I don't want to artificially boost the reward. I don't mind promoting other posts though (well I say promoting, I hardly spend 1 SBD per post, lol)
Thank you so much for stopping by, hope to see more of you in future.
xx Lucy
My advice is if you are not actively seeking online friends avoid discord, there are many cool people there and it does give you some friends and good comments, but you end up spending hours doing nothing on discord...
As you notice there is not that many "whale votes" out there because many of the whales just sell their voting power to bot-services...
So I would suggest using bidding bots for your posts,
but make sure they are "Grumpy Cat Compliant" so just to make sure, use the top one listed on: https://steembottracker.com
(I also recommend the bot @booster, it is good for a smaller bids, just make sure @booster has high voting power).
Then there is many resteeming services, some work better then others, but they give you more visitors.
You can check my blog and wallet, for example my latest post I was broke and I could not afford any bots or resteeming, it made 0.06 cents, the post before that made 15.99 cents, sure I use like a few SBD's on bots but I still think it is worth to invest in bots just to get the extra exposure, at least if it is a good post (but it is a little bit of a gamble every time and if you examine my wallet and bot-experimenting you can probably see that I might have lost SBD's on a post, not sure ).
Cheers!
/FF
Thank you for that @friendly-fenix
I truly appreciate it!
I will certainly drop by your blog and try to implement the tips.
Hope to see more of you around.
xx Lucy
Nothing new in my blog right now, feel a bit uninspired...
Bu lets try and stay interconnected @lucygarrod.
It was nice "talking" to you!
/FF
I have got no edu like this before. This is very help to improve. Thanks @lucygarrot for your wonderful post. Thanks for your gift anyway.
Thank you @rikaz87 I truly appreciate your kind words.
Hope to see more of you around.
xx Lucy
So do I. Lucy
I couldn't agree more witg your post@lucygarrod. I love giving my respondants an upvote for commenting on my ish. Its so fulfilling helping otgers get paid.
Thank you for your kind comment @kofibeatz
I truly appreciate it.
Yes, it is certainly good to give! The more you give, the more you'll get.
xx Lucy
Hallelujah!
Resteeming. This just seems polite and courteous. It is disheartening for me as a new user to write content no one seems to read. Im going to definately follow your advice as it seems courteously sound. 💙
I know all about it :)
You can see my posts are no money spinner but hey at least we got some friends on the platform who like to hear from us.
Let me know how it goes for you :)
xx Lucy
cheers! Yes, that's true, friends are more important than money, but I would like to earn a little more - I'm not sure it's not just that gratification response anyway - like ooooh, my post got 'this' much' - I'm not even sure it's about the money! he he
lol! I totally get you. It would be nice to make more money but it seems everyone not just whales but even minnows and planktons whose votes are not worth much are saving their upvotes for themselves and not willing to give it to others, and that results in very few posts making enough to buy even a loaf of bread. I know my upvote is not worth much but for what it's worth, here is my upvote for you to encourage you to carry on :)
xx Lucy
Thanks so much. You are so kind. Ive been doing same and I love the way you are encouraging this more considerate behaviour. 💙 Generosity Rules 🤛
The best part of Steemit as we are growing is the interaction between people, I have found that there are good things and habits or customs we can take from every culture. Sometimes I like a comment even if there was no upvote, over an upvote alone. When you have an upvote without a comment, it feels like the person did not read your content. Your own content is important to you, or it should be. The best of course is the upvote, comment and resteem.
Great content on this post! I try to intaeract as much as possible with all my following.
Thank you also for the gift in my wallet this morning.
God bless!
Daddy William
Hey @mhm-philippines (Daddy William) I agree that there is good things we can learn from almost everyone if we open ourselves to it. I think it is all about finding a balance. I pointed out upvoting as a way of showing appreciation (another follower of mine had also made a special request in my last post that I emphasise the importance of upvoting because upvotes are really what help your reputation on the platform and reputation is really important). Thank you so much for your kind words, I look forward to seeing you in the next post as well :)
xx Lucy
Resteeming is also excellent! See you around!
Absolutely! Resteeming is great way to help someone :)
Hey @lucygarrod, nice post with good advice. Thanks for your payment :)
:) Thank you so much @btcsam
I truly appreciate your kind words and support.
xx Lucy
Hi, Lucy
It is a good suggestion of practice. I will follow your suggestion and start act now. Thanks
That's great Sisi :)
Let me know how it goes for you

You certainly have your finger on the pulse @lucygarrod and have some worthwhile initiatives to offer - thank you.
Sometimes we swim with the current and sometimes against it.
What we need to establish is how to maintain a steady pace forward in either direction of the current?
