The Old Dog Presents: The Mundane as Art Round Eight. Sand Patterns!

in #mundaneart7 years ago (edited)

How many grains of sand are there in the entire world? Good question and science author Robert Krulwich took a stab at answering the question in his article here.

"if you assume a grain of sand has an average size and you calculate how many grains are in a teaspoon and then multiply by all the beaches and deserts in the world, the Earth has roughly (and we're speaking very roughly here) 7.5 x 1018 grains of sand, or seven quintillion, five hundred quadrillion grains."

Seven Quintillion, Five Hundred Quadrillion Grains!

Hey, that's a lot of material with which to create art. Let's go for it! I became fascinated with the sand while strolling along the beaches of Tenerife during my visit there last week. What great memories!

In This Round we Are looking For Sand Patterns!

Here are a few Mundane Art pictures that I snapped with my phone:

Hey there!!@kus-knee Here is my entry photo, I took it on Nikon-D3200 camera when I was in Thailand back in 2015. This place is called Railay Bay, which is in Krabi province.Extremely beautiful spot, nice beach with white sand😊Thank you for the opportunity, I’m very excited to participate!

Very good. Did you draw the hearts?

Thank you;) Yeah, with my own hands😊

That's so beautiful. How did you get rid of the foot prints? I've always wondered about such things.

I just took the long stick drew these hearts and little footsteps I made near i evened with the sand;)

I'm going to have to give this a try. I have a message I'd like to write and then photograph.

That's so romantic @damira, loving it :)

Thank you😊

Wow man, such huge number of sand particles. I didn't know that so learnt something from your post.
Anyway it is night here now, so I might try to capture picture tomorrow and be part of this contest.
Thank you

I would enter but there is snow everywhere!!

Indeed, that would make it tough! What solution could there be?

I’m in India right now and there isn’t snow here where I’m living right now so I guess I could find some place where there is sand and no snow!!

Here's my entry

Now that's art!

wispy prettiness....love the pink vignetting..... :)

That's so beautiful @lellabird60, am thinking of hair and cotton candy :)

This is a great entry. Very much fits the theme but so different from my examples.

That looks like floating fishes patterns, nice one @bluefinstudios.

Thanks, @ainie.kashif!

You are most welcome, best of luck for the contest and best wishes for the new year :)

Looks like floating poo type 5...don't mind me, am a nurse😂

Here's my entry. I'm a bit limited as the ground around here is frozen solid so no cool sand tracks to be found but I have always loved the patterns that are created when the ground is so dry that it cracks.

I really do love your photo and I'm giving it an upvote. I'm not so sure that it fits the theme and I know that sand is not always accessible to everyone. Thanks so much for sending it in and please do join us for the next round!

Ha ha, I did wonder if it was stretching it too far to submit dry, hard cracked "Sand"/dirt. ;-) It's definitely not the fine powdery sand you find on a beach.

This competition makes me really miss living near the coast... especially as I'm freezing my a** off everyday here in Utah! Lol.

Still it is a lovely photo! I spent my first 35 years in Canada so I know how you feel!

Thank you!

Canada is beautiful! I don't know how I'd handle a winter there though. ;-)

Here is my entry, picture made in Marocco

Oh @vee2180, I am so pleased that you have sent in another picture for this round!

Soon I will prepare The Mundane Art: Rust virtual gallery and you will have a prominent place there as one who inspires others.

I am honoured to be in 😊

Are these horse hooves? Horse riding on the beach is on my bucket list! You can call this Horse Shoes in the Sand. Nice textures.

Yes it was on the Moroccan beach, and you could ride a horse there I believe the place called Essaouria 😊

Hi @kus-knee. I made this one just few minutes ago.

You got the point. Nice entry!

IMG_8051.JPG

Here's my 1st submission for consideration in a mundane virtual art gallery. Coral skeleton & sea shells on 'special' sand....

Yes, "special" sand :) Great effort!

Sand!?!?! Sand!! Oh so devious!! Now I have to think of how I can possibly get a sand pic in Rainy cold Scotland!

Time to use some of your Steemit success to take the good lady somewhere warm? Improves relations, gets you contest photos and provides many ideas for Boomer yarns!

Ha, yes! A splendid idea were it not for the little boom, we have horrifyingly decided to forego a holiday this year!! Eek.

You know me though, I like to be inventive ;0)

You are even wiser than I gave you credit for. We saw quite a few couple with little babies at our hotel and I was wondering how it was going for them.

Yes you are inventive. One guy already asked if kittie litter would be OK!

Ha, kitty litter might be going a bit too maverick!

Go to Eire!!! It's near Glasgow mate!

Ayr, is much nearer! ;0)

Oh i thought you're from Glasgow🤣

maybe your belly button? I know I'm going to probably regret this suggestion..... 😬

HAha, my belly button is so choked up with that odd blue-y purple fluff that I cant see the sand ;O)

Hmmm another Mundane Art theme?

Lol, I wonder what horrors that would present!

That would be so gross.....it would have to be a #whatisit theme.

are you a unicorn?

A gentleman never tells...

a right gentleman you are....and a scholar. :)

Probably not?

From my post on Ponce de Leon's Florida last year.

Nice! Simple with a contrast i love it!😋😋

Great one @roused!

Thanks, nature cacn't be beat :-)

preeety!! sand dune stipes.

I love this one so much, great work

I like it, I like it!

Here you go - some sandy art.
2.png
and you can visit my blog here

This is a lovely piece of art. I had to go and look your other articles to understand that I was really looking at sand in the form of the section of a sand cliff. A very clever entry indeed!

Thank you, kindly.

When is 'what makes sand' sand?

Love this submission @countrygirl. Abstraction is great and makes you wonder. 🦋

Thank you so much @allyinspirit. I usually go for abstract when trying to make something mundane look artsy. Glad you like it.

It's awesome @countrygirl

Thank you so much @immarojas! I appreciate the feedback.

I think the fun part is just to find others' entries lolsss

It's true, I totally enjoy this and I get to meet people I otherwise wouldn't get to know.

Hello You Old One! :)
Here I'm, again :)

A bit different sand.

I like different thinking! Can you please explain what it is. Are the bricks made of sand?

Here comes the SAND! doo doo doo 🎶

hello @kus-knee, Happy New Year!

Hi! Here is my entry:

@kus-knee I didn't really have a picture of sand, I had to cut it from another one I took on Margarita Island with my Samsung phone. In it appeared my beautiful mother.

We always have room for mom's in our gallery! Thanks for the entry!

Curonian Spit, Lithuania. Sand dunes on colourful sunset

Enjoy the scenery and a Happy New Year!

That's a gorgeous scene! I love how the sand has picked up the colors from the sunset - very soothing color @axeman!

Very beautiful. Thanks!

Quite a pity that possible to post only one... was veeeeeery hard to chose it :)

Look at that sky in flames!

Really nice sunset! Congrats!

Thanks so much for joining in the fun!

Thanks for hosting the contest! It was fun planning and creating the image for it!

What an amazing pattern. I love it!

This pattern reminds me of a blanket I crocheted. Nice texture and tones. I can see a bit of gold in there.

Hi..this is an old one, taken last year. The sand pattern isn't the focal point, but it's there somewhere😃

https://steemit.com/mundaneart/@immarojas/mundaneart-the-mundane-as-art-round-eight-sand-patterns

It's a stunning photo and I do see the pattern!

Thank you! Have fun!

Beautiful ... I see the sand pattern and the sunset or sunrise is gorgeous.

Sun-setting though it was still high up..coming from u is awesome😄😄

It's so hard for me to tell up or down with the sun. Thanks for letting me know ;)

Amazing! Great shot!

Thank you..love the edited version😋

Hi @kus-knee. I have just shared my picture..I hope you like it....

It's very nice and it fits our theme well!

Kind of a tourtise shell effect....or freckles. I like this sand under water pattern.

The markings on here look similar to hieroglyphs. I think they are tire and foot prints but make an interesting statement.

You’re very right, foot prints and tire tracks here

Well traveled sand!

Lool. Indeed they are

Beautiful.

Looks like a textile pattern. Beautiful. 🦋

It does doesn't it? I thought of cool summer sheets or a beautiful picnic table cloth.

Very cute☺

Hi @kus-knee

Thank you for this contest, but I really want to understand.
Do you mean we should make a picture of sand? I don't understand.

Please can anyone explain?

Use the samples I gave as a guide.

hi @kus-knee here is my sand photo. I have lived in Egypt for 15 years so have quite a few pictures from there. I have a few of sand only, but this one of a single vehicle track is quite interesting.

Thanks for sending it!

Ok thanks!

Your welcome !✌👍

Really nice effect!

Hello @kus-knee, here is my entry photo.

Very nice!

Hi @kus-knee life is amazing: yesterday I was talking to my wife about big numbers, and we finished up arguing about the number of sand grains that you can find on the entire planet. That's why I decided to post one of my photos regarding the subject of your contest. It's always interesting reading your posts. Regards Tiz of @tzerophotography

I like it. Thanks!

Hello Friend @kus-knee! Sand photos are my favorites! I found many interesting things from my trip to the Black Sea. I think that this ruined sand castle is perfect for the competition!

Thanks for sending your photo. It certainly is an interseting pattern but I don't see any sand.

I’ve seen your art gallery posts but only just now realized that it’s a contest. Cool! I look forward to participating.

One thing you’d for sure get some cool shots of is “eyes” or an eye.

Fabric textures... I know I’ll think of others. 😉

Thanks for your ideas!

Hey^^

Here is my entry. Thanks for the good idea! This'll be another good collection!

Thanks for joining in!

Another week, another subject! And here is my entry:

Thanks a lot!

Ciao grande!

YDXJ0365.jpg

So cool. Grazie per avere participato!

Mi fa davvero piacere! Grazie a te, la tua inventiva è a dir poco superlativa! Bravo!

I don't speak Italian, at least I think I recognize a few words. I love this photo. Each way I turn it is interesting. The mirror effect works!

Glad that you like it, I really appreciate! I will translate everything for you! :)
"Your contests are adorable! This is a shot that I took of an Alpine Newt on the sand during an excursion to Arpy Lake in La Thuile (Aosta Valley), I hope you like it and that it is worthy of being between this greats pictures proposed by other participants!"
I took it with Xiaomi Yi, I like also the mirror effect that was accidental! ;)

Accidents are the best photos ever, I have found. Thank you for the translation!

This is my entry for this round of the contest.

Thanks for entering!

Thanks for having this contest and you are welcome!@kus-knee,

Cheers~

A nice experience to see and photograph.

Wow, Tenerife, to be frank, I'm a bit jealous. I've been three times to Gran Canaria and enjoyed the sand dunes there very very much! I hope to visit Tenerife as well. You've come up with a great idea about a sand art! Congats.
Here's one of my photos from Gran Canaria (an island next to Tenerife):

Quite the desert!

A unique post in your style.
Today I could not invest in Steem Power, do you know what's going on?

I'm not sure what your problem is. I powered up 1 Steem as a test and it worked fine.

I wanted to buy Steem Power

We do not have the option to invest in Steem Power through blocktrades.

Ok I see that Steem and SBD aren't there. I traded SBD a few hours ago and both options were available. Check later or send him an email. He usually answers very quickly.

Ok Thanks my friend

It's back up!

Thank you,
I bought

Sand is nowhere here :) Sandy seaside is far away :( Neither snow :))) only fog :(((
maybe next time :)))

amazing, i like it

Oh no. How can we not have you this time! I have a jar of sand that I collected. Shall I send it to you to work with? :)

If I can't get some sand, will cat litter also count?

Hmm. Don't ask, Don't tell! :)
