Relearning to play an instrument

in #music7 years ago

Hey guys. I have a problem that I'm sure a lot of musicians here have had. I used to play the guitar. A lot. And I was very comfortable with my level of play. Well then I started my career at 20 got married the same year, and started my family the next.

I simply have not had enough time to really play my guitars the last 12 years. I've had moments where I pick it up a few times a year and pound out some chord progression. But nothing too crazy.

I have also tried several times a year to really buckle down and relearn. And this is where my problem comes. I know how to do x, y, and z. Wether that be a technique, a tempo, or just playing a song. But in the performance side I'm lacking. I physically am so out of practice I can't actually do it.

And this is where the greater problem comes in. Because I was able to do this stuff and can no longer I have a hard time slowing down and going back to basics and square one with training. I've been there. I've done that. I'm better than that. I know it's mental and ego, but still.

A couple of solutions I have had is to pick up other instruments to try something new. I bought a banjo a few years ago. Figured out claw picking and rolling. Had a blast. Picked up a mandolin when my grandfather passed and derped around on that. This week I picked up a tenor sax to mess around with wind instruments for the first time.

This plan has scratched my creative itch. But at heart I'm a guitarist. I did download Rocksmith. And it's fun and helps a bunch, but at the end of the day it takes too long with my limited time.

Any advice. Any other struggling as I am?
