It's a long story.
You may say Cantonese is a dialect of the Guangdong Province of China (South China). In the past 100 years, as nearly all Chinese immigrants in the world are from Guangdong, almost all Chinese immigrants in the world speak Cantonese. And nearly all foreigner learn Cantonese instead of Mandarin. Now, there are around 120M people speaking Cantonese as mother tongue language.
Of course, now foreigners learn Mandarin instead of Cantonese.
Cantonese is now wisely used in Guangdong, Hong Kong, Macau, Malaysia and Singapore.
