In This Moment – Why Haven’t I Heard of Them Before?

in #music7 years ago

So, I was lying in bed the other night tossing and turning, unable to sleep. I was recovering from the nasty flu that was going around and, since dreamland was evading me, I did what any normal person would do……I logged into YouTube to watch random videos.

This is hardly unusual for me. My mood will usually dictate what I watch, be it game reviews, stand up comedy, movie trailers, politics, or music videos. This evening, one of my recommendations was titled

Best Rock & Metal Covers of Popular Songs

In this video, around the 2:25 mark, In The Air Tonight by Phil Collins came on. Anyone who knows me will attest that I am a HUGE Phil Collins / Genesis fan. Anyways, a group called In This Moment covered the song. They had a female lead vocalist and a great voice from the little bit of a clip I could hear, however, these clips were insanely short and the video continued on it’s merry way.

Around the 7:40 mark, Creep by Radiohead popped up, yet another song I love. Lo and behold, In This Moment was covering this song as well! At this point I had to stop the video and type in In The Moment into the search bar. The first song I clicked on was called “Big Bad Wolf” I was immediately hooked! The production on this video was amazing as was the song. I felt like I was watching a female version of Rob Zombie! Indeed, there are many influences I noticed from the song. In fact, if I had to describe this particular song to someone, I’d say it’s a Hard Rock version of Lady Gaga singing a Rage against the Machine song in a Rob Zombie video!

Before anyone attacks that statement, I mean it as a compliment of the highest sorts!

Their front woman, Maria Brinks, is a beautiful, powerful woman who commands your attention. Her voice is amazing, and her outfits are varied and entertaining (hence the Gaga reference) I am a huge fan of Halestorm’s Lzzy Hale and Evanescence’s Amy Lee, and Brinks just added herself to the mix of my favorite female rockers.

It’s not all about Maria either. The rest of the band is great as well, from the backup dancers, to the drummer, bassist, and guitarist….the whole package is simply entertaining. Another nice thing I’ve noticed is that their videos are fairly varied as well. Take the dark, dungeon setting of Big Bad Wolf, then transition over to “Oh Lord“, then to “Whore“, while they all have the grungy gothic overtone, it never feels like your watching or listening to the same song over and over again.

What are your thoughts? Are there any groups you have found on YouTube that you wish you had found earlier?in-this-moment-black-widow-album-cover.jpg

I love listening to In This Moment, but I got to be honest, their live show was quite bad. Maria's screams were fierce as hell but the clean vocals were just bad. The rest of the band was quite boring. To be fair though, it was late in the tour and I'm sure they were exhausted.

Their first big-ish song was "beautiful tragedy" but I looove their older stuff. Heavier and screamier!

@jonnydonuts I have found, unfortunately, that many bands just can't perform live. It spans all genres as well. I've seen Fleetwood Mac, Seether, Linkin Park, Florida Georgia Line.....just to name a few. I was disappointed in all of their live venues.
