Ann Wilson from Heart covered "Black Hole Sun" on Kimmel last night. A fitting tribute?? What do you think? (Includes video) [short post]

in #music8 years ago (edited)

I love Heart, Ann Wilson, Soundgarden, Chris Cornell, and "Black Hole Sun," so I had really high hopes for this performance.

However, upon watching this performance, I mean...her voice is on point (Edit: not like Dreamboat Annie era Ann Wilson, but damn good considering time, the fact she probably wasn't familiar with the song, etc.) but it looks like she's reading lyrics from a stand the entire time...this really bothers me. Does it bother anyone else? Was this a true tribute or a marketing ploy for an occasion?

Does it even matter? Is a tribute a tribute regardless of whether the person knows the song or what? I mean...to me, it lost some meaning because it didn't feel like this was a song with which she was super familiar.

What do you think?

Considering he only died a day or two ago I think she did ok. I just don't think the song is really her style.

Pretty sure this post is directed at me....sooo......watching it just hurts....she doesn't look up from that music stand like the words haven't changed in 20 years..... Listening to it just sounds forced.......and the band doesn't seem into it.... poor tribute at best...

Thank you for replying...this was partially directed at you, as I figured you would feel the same as I did.

It really bothers me that she doesn't look up from that stand. I mean...I understand wanting to get the words right...and I understand using a music stand...but if that's the time for a tribute, at least get someone else in there who knows what they're covering.

...and I love Ann Wilson so much, so this is causing all kinds of mixed emotions within me.

I am a fan of Ann Wilson and heart. And I of course I'm a fan of Soundgarden and Chris Cornell but I am not a fan of how she did Black Hole Sun. Just felt too "off" for me.

I agree with you there...Dreamboat Annie is one of my favorite albums of all time.

The more I listen to it, the more I hate everything about it and I'm having such a hard time resolving this fact. Her voice, the fucking music stand...all just starts to feel downright disrepectful as opposed to a tribute.

I agree... I hated it. And it looks as if it was just a last minute thing that she didn't even practice or want to do... Very sad...
