Like many of you I love live music. From street musicians, to pubs, to concert halls, I'll take it all.
One thing that I have noticed is that some older "legends" of music can now be seen in more intimate settings. Their diminished fame no longer has them filling huge stadiums but as an audience member that's a good thing! Their musical skills have been enhanced with time and the advances in the technology of sound systems plus the smaller venues makes for a delightful experience! Better than ever!
Steve Hackett enchanted us with his tight band and his virtuoso talent which has been honed over decades!
Steve Hackett of Genesis Fame at Castello Sforzesco in Vigevano Italy
On July 4th 2017 I had the the fabulous experience of attending a concert by Steve Hackett, one of the driving forces of the early progressive rock period of Genesis. Of course, after leaving Genesis he has gone on to a decades long solo career with 25 albums!
During the concert, in which he played for over 2 hours, he delighted us with many pieces from his solo career and then a wide range of what he calls Genesis Revisited!
Check Out The location of the Venue!
The location for the concert was the grassy area that you see here. Foto Credit
Here are some shots of the Piazza outside the venue. It all made for a magical evening!
Our Seats Were Row 7 Center Stage With an Intimate 600 Present!
Once the sun set they started playing. The sound quality was superb and the atmosphere enchanting! The shadows cast on the ancient walls added to the ambiance!
Here's a Little Taste of What We Saw
A section of the song Musical Box from Genesis's 1971 album "Nursery Crimes"
All in all it was one of the greatest concerts that I have ever attended. The only draw-back was that they started at 9:30 pm and finished at about 11:45 pm. By the time we got home and to bed it was about 3:00 a.m and I got up at 05:00 am for work!
Can I Give You a Little Advice?
Go out and see some of these "old timers" while you still can. They offer these advantages:
- Their musicianship is better than ever
- Sound equipment has evolved and so their music is crisp and clear
- You can see them up close and personal in smaller venues
What About You?
- Are you a fan of the progressive rock era?
- Do you prefer concerts in more intimate settings?
- Have you seen any "legends" of music lately? (last year I saw Roger Hodgson of Supertramp..amazing!)
I hope that you enjoyed this article about seeing a "Legend Perform in an Intimate Setting"!
Until next time,
@kus-knee (The Old Dog)

If I do get the privilege of attending these small concerts, I'll make sure to wear adult diapers. The excitement will maybe make me soil myself and I don't wanna go to the bathroom while the performance is on!
Hey @darthnava I was just speaking about you today! Your great attitude despite your difficulties is so encouraging!
Thank you for upvoting my comment, @kus-knee. I do my best to put humor in my situation.
You really seem to be very funny. Just added to you in my following list, coz I wanna see laughter every day here at steemit.
You are really funny, I'll be adding you to my following list
Thanks for that @darthnava... a good laugh at the end of the day! I hope you are doing well!
Thank you for your concern.
What a great looking venue!
I never heard about his old career after Genesis. I was not so involve in progressive rock, but I like many bands. I prefer intimate concerts right now. And the last, no, I live in Venezuela and right now is not a good place for bands to play. Take care
Yea I never knew about his career after Genesis either!
I also FAR prefer small venue concerts, though most of the big bands u never get to see in such places.
I remember seeing a few bands before they were super huge in small venues which I will cherish fondly.
You are in Venezuela! I wonderful place but tough times for sure. All the best to you @vadimlasca
Yes, in Caracas. Is hard now, but we''l be ok soon. Thank you @kus-knee
OH MAN!
I LOVE Genasis!
What an awesome experience! Plus it was powered by STEEM!!
SteemON DAWG!
Hey Mighty Quinn! Glad to know that you enjoy their music. Some of it is a bit of an acquired taste! You are a good man and you're doing great stuff down at the Garden!
Its not for everybody but obviously there were plenty of people who liked it.
Its cool when you meet people from different parts of the world, living different lives from different generations and yet so much similarity is shared.
Its fun to get to know the sold dog better ;-)>
Fabulous experience!
Amazing place for a such concert! I like particurarly the Pink-Floyd and Jethro Tull. I luckily saw Jethro Tull once! I love intimate concert, I remember once I was at a blues event and there were a really bad weather. Instead of delete everything they found a place inside an old barrack and the artists did they music at theyr best! It probably was one of my favourite concert ever!
Yes, I saw Roger Waters at Moon and Stars in Locarno. Wow!
I do rememeber he went there, you did a deal!
Thank you for posting @kus-knee.
Lovely photographs and video....will watch in a bit...loooking forward to it.
Very kind of you to bring to Steemians this experience....a once in a lifetime experience to be sure.
It sounds like a lovely way to spend an evening...morning.... ^_^
Wishing you and yours all the best. Cheers.
Thanks so much for having a look!
Music blog, great! Love it!!!
I'm not really a fan...but I love Pink Floyd!
Even Tool I like too much, but they are younger than Genesis&c.
I like to see live concert in a small pub till big arenas!
Lately i saw Marylin Manson..but just because my girlfriend love him!
Glad that you enjoy love music! I had the chance to see Roger Waters of Pink Floyd a couple of times and it was special.
I would like to see them live too!
I love music! I also have a band, i'm the singer, we make death metal, i don't know if you like It..
:)
Death Metal! Yes I've heard some in Lugano when there was a Death Metal competition for different bands.
...and did you like It?
Amazing experience. Love the venue but the work day after.....whew! I live where I am able to see some of the famous musicians as they do venues in and around NYC. I am sad that they are leaving us, due to age, faster than I can see them. Thanks for sharing your wonderful evening with us!
Wow NYC. So much live music to enjoy!
Hey Old Dog!
I'm honest... I know Genesis and I never liked that much. Anyway... I will check the Steve-Hacket-Video when I'm at home ;-)
I love live music and concerts!
Big hug
Hey @steemitri early Genesis is a required taste. Progressive rock is usually quite complicated in structure and basically the classical music of rock. Of a simpler nature but still progressive rock is Pink Floyd. I saw Roger Waters perform the entire album "Dark Side of The Moon" at Moon and Stars a few years back....amazing.
I also went to the performance of The Wall in Zurich and it was the greatest spectacle I have ever seen!
Thanks for coming by!
Cool, for sure the rock and music of the old days is the best, when music was played by humans still ;-) I would love to see Pink Floyd live one day. My hosts are going to intimate concerts when there is a chance and they promised me that they would take me with them, I am so looking forward to it :-)
The Beatles are also quite good!!
Thanks for the album pic!
I love everything live. Music, theatre ...or even life. Many people live a passive life which is controlled by others. I love living my own life live
Speaking of concerts, I did get the opportunity to attend the performance of many national artists. And I like the enthusiasm in the audience towards the end when audience aren't prepared to leave and put requests for their favourites and when artist happily give in to that.
Thanks for sharing your experiences.
wowowow!!! Great experience you had, dear friend!
I'm a fan of the progressive rock era, sure, and I don't know if I prefer concert in intimate settings or not, the most important thing for me is to hear good music, possibly very close to the stage :D
Do you prefer concerts in more intimate settings?
Thanks the events for the "Pistoia Blues" I've seen many legends in my city as Santana, BB King, Jethro Tull, David Bowie and others, but not lately.
Which prog bands do you enjoy? So cool to know! Yes those blues festivals are great!
from the past Genesis and Pink Floyd at first, from the present the Radiohead ;)
So glad you did this post Old Dog. If you check my profile you'll understand why I wrote that ;-)
Steve Hackett is a true legend, and what a venue!
You asked:
Are you a fan of the progressive rock era?
Big time
Do you prefer concerts in more intimate settings?
No comparison, intimate concerts are immeasurably better.
One of my all-time-favorite intimate concerts was a few years back: Todd Rundgren with the Metropole Orchestra @ the Paradiso in Amsterdam. That venue is an old church with two balconies that wrap around the stage.
In this tiny venue they managed to squeeze in a 60 piece orchestra! The concert was also on Dutch radio. @roused
That's very impressive. @qsounds mentioned the Paradiso in another comment on this post. Great to see these places being used!
Oh my goodness, that looks like it would have been amazing! I shared this to the Steemit social media queue.
Thanks so much @hilarski! Where would Steemit be without you? Not nearly as good or as successful! You're a great example of steering clear of FUD!
What a spectacular setting! Going to bed at 3 and getting up at 5am you must have felt like a teenager again----only a lot more exhausted - lol!
I think the best time to see bands is either before they become really famous and after their peak years, when they're older. The small venues are absolutely the best!
Yes, it reminded me of the all nighters that I did during college! Thanks for coming by!
My pleasure!
Cool music :) And cool old streets... I want see very this old streets.
I was look this golden light will bring these streets up well.
Fabulous experience! Lovely photographs and video....
Thanks a lot!
I've had a few nice opportunities to see bands in intimate settings... and definitely an excellent experience. Much of what I think of as "my music" was 1980s... in "later years" I have seen Howard Jones, Depeche Mode and the Fixx play small venues.
Other memorable events was walking through a park in Copenhagen during the summer of 1980 where there was a weekend of "alternative" rock... just as a band took the stage... and a (now) famous voice yelled "We're U2, and we're from Dublin!" Amazing sound and energy! That was just before they got big.
Also had the privilege of seeing an unknown band called "The Police" at a small club in London in 1977... while I was in boarding school in the UK.
You've got some nice stories for the grandchildren. :)
Seeing a few bands before they got big is always interesting. The Police also played in a pub in Toronto before that hit it big.
When I was young, the large venues or rock festivals were fun. Sound quality and comfort were unimportant to us young folk. Nowadays, give me a comfortable small venue with good sound, comfy seat, and a nearby restroom LOL
I hear younon your points especially the rest room!
(1) your presentation and written skill is excellent sir....always you have earned my respect.
(2) you have got good command.
(3) I think you have more creative and different idea
(4) I think you have very good tips and tricks about this platform

(5) Thank you so much this post

Cheers!...Wow..once again nice post with good article from @kus-knee ( the old dog)
Thanks so much for your kind words and for taking the time to comment!
oh, lucky you!
as a guitarist, I loved Steve Hackett's music since "Horizons" ;)
Paulo, he was so in love with Italy and the venue. He even did his best to speak some Italian which the audience loved! I also heard him sing and his voice is very good! Great guitarist and a true lover of live performance .
well, I hope to have another chance to see and listen to him :)
Seems like you had a lot of fun on this concert. You look inspired and happy.
Unfortunately, I have not heard this band and I do not really know the musicians of this style. However, I understand your feelings at the concert. Once upon a time I really liked Armin van Buuren and I always dreamed of getting on his performance. One day my wish was fulfilled. It was very cool and memorable.
Great to read that you saw Armin van Buuren! I know that you are a lover of the arts and it's great to support artists!
Thanks a lot! I appreciate that ! Im trying to become a designer. Im working now on my own vase collection. I will present it soon on Steemit)))
Yes I love attending live concert. Didn't get any chance to attend concert of any international artists but I do attend concert of all Bollywood artist whenever i get a chance.Have you ever attended any concert of Bollywood artist?
You know @swaraj I love so many types of music. Actually tabla and citar are so cool. Bollywood I've only seen on flights going from Milan to Toronto.
Wow I totally agree and what an awesome gig that must have been. You are spot on about getting to see the greats in smaller more intimate venues. It's a blessing truly! Your photos are great.
Loving your blog, Upvoted and resteemed!!
Thanks so much @sallybeth23!
My absolute pleasure!!
Concerts like this are like once in a lifetime chance to see legends up close in a not so crowded spot. You did have a blast! Cheers.
Thanks for stopping by!
You're welcome :)
I would have been blown away aswell
You had a wonderful time in this concert and must be feeling like you have witnessed some great musicians of the century. I will also be visiting some cool concerts and sharing with you experiences.
With your user name you MUST do music posts!
Hey Old Dog, are you a progressive rock fan? I know a guy, I mean I really know a guy that you may have heard of that is an artist in that genre.
And now you leave me hanging?.................................................He is?.........
Totally agree with you on this! Back in the 60's I was seeing my musical hero's in relatively small venues. Then into the 70 and forward the stadiums starting getting bigger. In fact, so big that if you were unwilling to fork over 2wks of paychecks, you might as well bring benoculars to see the band. I have that up for years, and opted for just watching on MTV.
Finally, it's happening that you can catch some of these great musician in small intmate venues, in some case even able to stop and tell them yourself how much you enjoyed the show. This is the way it should be.
You make a lot of good observations!
Very nice, love the intimate place of the concert.. that's giving 2 extra dimensions to such a performance.
That's for sure!
What Will be your next concert? Anything planned yet?
I will attend the blues festival in Lugano.
http://www.bluestobop.ch/website/
Nice, have much fun over there... I will go on 26 august to festival.

Dang, looks like a beautiful venue and quite a show. Thanks for sharing!
For sure!
So good to see the Rocking performance :) Thanks for sharing this
Oh god that must've been awesome!
Regarding intimate vs. bigger concerts, I'd say both are great in different ways, I can't say I have a preference
Yes the atmosphere and the awesome music.....WOW!
Great guys, you have enjoyed your life fully. I love music much, but not have the opportunity to enjoy legend. Though I had enjoyed the most popular singer of Assam Jubin garg rock concert lastly.I am not an artist but I love to listen music specialy the old Hindi songs of veturn singers.Anyway thanks for sharing such an amazing concert video. I like it so much, I also like pictures of piazzas.Thank you so much for such an amazing post. They are awesome! I am blown away too. Its been a while I've not gone in intimate concerts :d
Thanks for having a look!
Nice when it is cosy, you feel more intimity, feel more close to the band and good rock can be everywhere! And Italy; WOW !! there most things are nice.
Your post was mentioned in the hit parade in the following category:Congratulations @kus-knee!
Ah che beellllli! Che musica e che ricordi....Fantastici.Si ascoltano sempre con molto piacere.Fanno tanto bene al cuore...
Yes good memories and great musicians!
I totally agree with you! The classics and older bands still performing in smaller venues and the huge improvement in sound systems and speakers make their performances great! Yesterday I was watching a recent documentary about UB40, 40 years in music. They still perform at bigger events, but also in smaller venues. Not so long ago (late 2016) they where in my little country in a super nice venue, Paradiso, an old church, but unfortunately I was not able to go :)
LOVE the Paradiso!
Great place indeed, the sound system could be a bit better though :)
Yes UB40 is still a the top of their game. That venue looks great. Thanks for the pic!
big believer in smaller venues i saw white snake a while ago in the civic hall w-ton seen tribute bands at the robin 2 with some of the original white snake playing.robin 2 is a small venue so you can get up close to see how they make the great music theyplay
That was great for you!
meep
Oh the 'old timers' were the best musicians. They actually played AND sang the music themselves. They performed with heart, and loved what they were doing. Before the advent of humongous pay for mediocre talent. I love the intimate venues, too and have managed to catch a few such performances. Not in near as grand a place as you're in, mind you LOL
Looks simply fabulous and so glad you had a helluva time!!!
Yes "The Good Old Days!" Even Crosby, Stills and Nash passed through this way recently!
Actually I am agree with your 3 opinions:
#1. Their musicianship is better than ever
#2. Sound equipment has evolved and so their music is crisp and clear
#3. You can see them up close and personal in smaller venues@kus-knee,
Yeah, whatever music comes, we are still listening those classical musics, I mean classical age musics and that's giving the real pulses to our heart rates ;)
Thank you very much for sharing such great experiences with us! Really appreciate your effort and I like your taste of music as well!
Cheers~
Thanks so much for stopping by and sharing your views! I actually went there with two 17 year olds and they loved it too!
It's amazing how many great artists came out of that band to have solo careers.
So true!
I just could not help but notice how the date of that concert coincided with the American independence day celebration. Did that cross your mind too???
I think that makes it really significant in some "i can't seem to figure it out" way.
Even without being there myself, I see from reading your post that it was a wonderful time you had.
steem on
I want to give you bliss: the violin plays on the street in Lviv. Video concert for you!
This is a great music, my friend @kus-knee! You gave me pleasure! I love the violin most of all! https://steemit.com/travel/@olga.maslievich/i-want-to-give-you-bliss-the-violin-plays-on-the-street-galitsky-in-lviv-video-concert-for-you
Thank s for your support!
It will be great Legendary the old dog.. 😊
I think you have taken a great chance.. 💪👍
Upvoted and resteemed.. 🤗
Thanks a lot!
Old dogs with experience are always good.
Thanks a lot!
That looks like the perfect location for a live outdoor concert! Summer nights in Italy are so warm and nice.
Yes it was an enchanting venue to which I hope to return. The next time I will take the next day off!
