In today's world you have so many options.. if you wish to be a musician, or a producer all the tools you need are not too far from arms length.
This is all you need.
wait.. no.. This is actually more than you "NEED" to create.
Those speakers cost like $300 .. each audio interface is like $200+ and that drum machine was like $1500..
thats crazy expensive if you are poor!! Honestly.. If you have a half-way decent computer and some average headphones - you can become an artist. YOU DON'T NEED A STUDIO
Ok, those are some big words. But really, to create a high quality produced demo you can use an average priced smartphone. It has a speaker, graphic interface and a microphone. what else do you really need?
There are cheap apps and even free apps that let you create multi layers synth and sample based production, and ones that let you record multi track audio recordings. And you can actually get some pretty sweet results with this alone.
So really, in 2016 - A laptop with some cracked software, (make sure you purchase the software once you begin to take your career seriously and start making money - its only fair and the right thing to do), some low-end studio-monitors (speakers - not screens), the cheapest MIDI trigger (keys, pads, or both).. a low-priced condenser mic (I suggest the AT-2020) is more than you need to create quality music.. but is indeed quite the nice setup if you decide to try make a life out of your music.
I'm a qualified and experienced audio engineer, producer and artist. I trained in large expensive as fuck studios with all the fancy lights and faders that move by themselves. YES this is amazing. This is what you really want. But its so fucking expensive! .........This is why you get a side hustle. Most people call a side hustle a "Job" but really it is just a process to exchange your extremely valuable time and sanity for a company you probably do not give two shits about for a pay rate hopefully a little better than minimum wage. When you do this "Job" thing, you can learn to budget and save for professional studio time.
So this is the setup I used to produce the music for, and record the vocals for my group's debut project "The Escape".. This project is still a work in progress. I upgraded from those poorman-expensive black and yellow monitors for the next size up and now we are in the mixing process. Those monitors were about $600.. the ones I have now were about $1000 .. And the quality is so much better. The money you put in is an investment. And this can take time if your a broke-ass like myself.
But thats the thing. You can slowly build up to a nice setup. But what this article is about, is the fact you can begin to create quality music right now! You dont need much - as I stated above.
I just want to see the world create more beautiful works of art. And it seems a lot of people think its too much hassle. But If you have any desire to create music there is nothing stopping you. smartphone or laptop, you can get cheap apps .. crack Fruity loops or Ableton live and away you go.
Thanks again to technology, youtube has so much resources to learn the basics of audio software and specialized techniques are available from places such as http://www.adsrsounds.com/tutorials/
This is all I am using to build my career as professional artist.
Actually. I had to sell my turntable to pay some bills.. fuck. But I'm saving up for a new one.
The hustle never stops man. and you have NO excuse not to start making the music you always wished you could do. Start now.
