HOW TO CREATE MAGNETIC SONG TITLES

in #music7 years ago

What should I call this song? Is this title captivating enough? Do I need a better title for this song?

Every songwriter has been plagued with those questions at song point in their songwriting careers or adventures but, unsurprisingly, many still face the unpalatable challenge of not knowing how to create a magnetic song title which can capture the listener's attention and imagination.

Having a great song title will attract the interest of the listener and make them want to know what the song is all about.

In this article we look into tested and dependable methods of creating that catchy song title that is every song writer's dream

A Good Song Title Should:

  • Be imaginative— The lady in red, weekend on the moon
  • Evoke emotions(love, hope, remorse etc) — Stay with me, I will remember you, Apologize, Always and forever
  • Create suspense — For old times sake, Top of my wish list, All I want for christmas
  • Be easy to relate to — Through my veins, Every day is a miracle
  • Be picturesque — Battle scars, Fast Car, Eye in the sky

Searching for Song Titles

Your song's title doesn't have to be original. In fact, song titles, movie titles, and book titles can be reused by anybody as they do not have copyright protection.

Steps to Take:

When next you're watching a movie, reading a book or a magazine, do the following:

  1. Watch out for words or phrases that capture your attention, jump start your imagination, or make you want to ask questions.
  2. Write down those words or phrases in your ideas book
  3. Play around with them by paraphrasing, looking for synonyms and related words to those you've found already. This gives you a much larger pool to choose from and, sometimes, even presents you with an alteration more captivating than what you started out with.
  4. Use contrast: By using contrasting words together in a title, you are getting the listener to raise an eyebrow and say "well, let me see what he's trying to say. "
  5. Use metaphors: Metaphors are the secret ingredients to magnetic song title creation. Not all titles have metaphors, but those that do elicit more attention from the listeners, and knowing how to create them is key.
  6. Avoid clichés like 'I miss you' and 'I love you': Those words are very common and have been been thoroughly overused. Look for creative ways to express how you feel without sounding cliché. For instance, instead of saying' 'I miss you', you could say 'A night without you. ' This is more specific, more picturesque and more attention-grabbing with the added advantage of not being cliché.

Some Song Title Ideas

  • Questions — Questions are great for song titles like: Should I go? Have I told you lately?
  • If — Song titles starting with 'if' have the inherent ability to engage the listener's imagination. Examples: Beyonce' If I were a boy, If I had a heart, Davido's IF.
  • Love — This is one of the most written about topics in music. Examples: My sunrise, Forever with you
  • Breakup —Game over, R Kelly's Radio message, Better off without you
  • Female names — Sweet Sally, Billie Jean, Soledad, Olivia
