As Planet Earth suffers from climate change, green energy is one of the major approaches that can help make it more sustainable. This has necessitated the need for celebrities to support movements that promote eco-friendly action and protect the earth. The number of artists going green has been on the increase, and the trend continues to persist. Some artists began the trend by joining or being in partnerships with nonprofit organizations. Through these efforts, the artists are being used as a voice to create awareness among their fans about green energy. Dave Matthews relied on a biodiesel-fueled bus during his tour. Multinational celebrities such as Adele are supporting efforts to provide sustainable and clean water solutions.
Non-profit Organizations
U2 have been on the forefront of the green energy movement. They are dedicated to cases such as Amnesty International, UNICEF, and RED. They have also been involved in environmental protests to stop the construction of the Sellafield nuclear reprocessing site in England while using music to encourage their fans to support green energy.
Commercial Efforts
Some artists who are at the forefront of supporting green energy include Justin Timberlake who sponsored a $16 million eco-friendly golf course. Jason Mraz began a foundation that helps programs like Surfrider which seeks to protect beaches and oceans. The Roots were also involved in several green energy efforts like hosting a pre-Grammy jam where they encouraged artists to create awareness on green energy. Willie Nelson even started a company that sells biofuel made from soybeans and established Farm Aid which was comprised of a series of concerts that have been running for 28 years to support American family farmers.
Legal Efforts
Thom Yorke is known for supporting the Friends of the Earth's "Big Ask" campaign that sought to encourage to the UK to establish laws for fighting global warming. Through his efforts, the artist created awareness about the issue, and this urged more people to support his case. Green Day also supported adoption of smarter energy policies and released several YouTube videos to voice his support.
Steemians, I will be coming out with posts about each artist and a case study to see how they have been using their music to help the environment.
