SPIRIT PERFORMANCE

in #music7 years ago

So, Friday night on the way home from my gig, I get a text message. Can you fill in again this Sunday on drums. My first response was, I'm sorry, I have things to do and this is simply not enough notice to learn 4 songs I am completely unfamiliar with ( new age contemporary Christian rock Newsong type stuff) Well after I considered my prayers for a Praise and Worship Band and thought of the joke where the drowning man let a boat and a helicopter go by while waiting for the Lord to save him, I quickly texted back that I would find a way to make it work. In truth, I did not have time to study, chart and assimilate the new songs. About half way through the warm up rehearsal I decided to quit trying to copy what little I could remember and just (angel) winged it. Don't take my word for it, BUT Candy and Ryan were there and thought it was one of the best performances ever. The bass player was a 14 year old girl whose main instrument was cello. While we were setting up she was hammering the bass line to "Sunshine Of Your Love" Now THAT"S my kind of child prodigy! Her timing was perfect, although the venue for that song was completely wrong. She probably didn't even know or comprehend the lyrics. Any way, this ragtag bunch was blessed by the spirit and a joyous noise was indeed made.
