Led Zeppelin name is already familiar in the ears of rock music lovers. Many of his works are famous to the whole world. However, one of the popular rock bands of the 1970s, now faced a problem. In fact, the personnel are old age.
As reported by The Guardian, earlier this week, vocalist Robert Plant and guitarist Jimmy Page must undergo trial in the United States. Because the two spearheads Led Zeppelin was accused of stealing the guitar chord for the opening of the song "Stairway to Heaven" which was released in 1971.
In a court ruling on Friday over the weekend, US District Judge Gary Klausner in Los Angeles said the song "Stairway to Heaven" was very similar to the instrumental number titled "Taurus" brought by the Spirit band in 1967.
If the court jury decides that the chords of both songs are the same, then Plant and Page must be responsible for copyright infringement. The proceedings are scheduled to take place on May 10, 2016.
The complaint comes out first after Wolfe complained about the similarity of the two melodies of the song in an interview. Unfortunately, after that he died of drowning in 1997 in the Pacific Ocean while trying to save his son.
The suit was first made by Michael Skidmore, representative of the late Randy Wolfe or better known as Randy California, guitarist of the Spirit band as well as composer in "Taurus".
Skidmore said that Page allegedly made the "Stairway to Heaven" guitar intro for Led Zeppelin after hearing Spirit bring "Taurus" when they toured together in 1968 and 1969. But after the song was recorded and exploded, Wolfe never got any credit.
Robert Plant and guitarist Jimmy Page who became the defendant said that Wolfe is a songwriter who does not have a copyright claim. Plus, the chord progression in question is so cliche, so they do not deserve copyright protection.
However, the judge said that a jury could have found a strong similarity between the first two minutes of Stairway to Heaven and Taurus. The section was dubbed the judge as "the most recognizable and important segment" of the songs.
However, Klausner missed claims against two other Led Zeppelin personnel, bassist John Paul Jones and Warner Music Group. "Stairway to Heaven" itself is a song from Led Zeppelin's fourth album titled Led Zeppelin IV.
Led Zeppelin stood in quartet formation in 1968 and disbanded in 1980, shortly after drummer John Bonham died in the same year. They last reunited in 2007.
