Last year we went to the gig in Brixton to celebrate the music of David Bowie that featured many musicians who worked with him along with lots of guest singer. This year they are taking the show on the road again. There are less guests, but still a lot of people who toured with Bowie.
We went to the show at London's Shepherd's Bush Empire. The last time my wife and I were there was 20 years ago to see Bowie on the Earthling tour. I have strong memories of that gig. It started with David playing Quicksand on acoustic.
Last night's gig also included that song. The singers were Mr Hudson, Angelo Moore (of Fishbone), Joe Sumner (son of Sting) and another guy whose name I didn't catch. They were all good, but Angelo really puts on a show with lots of costume changes. He also played the Theremin on some songs.
Stars of the band included pianist Mike Garson, guitarists Adrian Belew and Gerry Leonard plus bassist Carmine Rojas. I was a bit disappointed by Belew's performance last year, but I was happier with his performance this time. They played a good selection from Space Oddity to the final track of his final album. Of course they played all the big hits for the audience to sing along. My wife prefers this to a tribute band as she doesn't like watching someone try to be Bowie. Some of the singers had something of his style, but they were being themselves.
It's a lovely old venue. Like many of those in London it's an old theatre. It has three levels of balcony and we were on the second with a great view. It's not as big as the Brixton venue and the sound was much better this time. They had real issues with sound last year which was disappointing.
We had a good evening out with our friends. We parked at the fairly new Westfield shopping centre. Their car park is a bit high tech with lights to guide you to a free space. It wasn't that expensive by London standards. We had dinner in the food court before the gig. Getting home was easy as there's not that much traffic late at night, so we were home just after midnight.
Bowie's music should be played and these people are highly qualified to do that.
Rock on!
I'm Steve, the geeky guitarist.

I remember listening to Bowie many years ago, on a radio station that played Bowie every day, mostly from the Ziggy Stardust and Spiders from Mars. I did not ever focused on Bowie, not until recently when he was all over the news for a bad reason, unfortunately. I grew to admire not only the musician, but a man of many talents with a glorious personality.
Btw, when I think of Bowie, what comes to mind immediately is a BBC tv series, about a detective that without explanation travels back in time and appear in the 70's, having the same job and duties! The title music was by Bowie, and the series was named Life on Mars.
And I agree, it is much better to see how an artist influences others, than watching others trying to be that artist.
I think people like him for being different and endlessly creative. That TV show was quirky, like Bowie
I'd kill to see Adrian Belew live in concert! Sounds like a great time.
I'd love to have seen him with King Crimson. They are still touring, but I've not seen them yet.
