Metal Weekend: Let there be rock

in #music7 years ago

@detlev has been running the #metalweekend tag for a while now encouraging people to share some favourite heavy music. Of course metal covers a huge range and that can include ballads, but there's generally some heavy guitar in there somewhere. Here are some I've dredged up from my memories.

Diamond Head - Canterbury

I used to use the local library to borrow albums (on vinyl back then). Of course as a poor teenager I would often tape these. I would try all sorts and discovered a few bands that way. This was one I had on tape, but that cassette is long gone. I recently re-discovered the album as a Youtube playlist and here's the title track. There's some elements of Queen in there.

Queen - Keep Yourself Alive

Talking of Queen, one of my all time favourite bands. They might not be classed as metal, but they could be as heavy as many metal bands and Freddie had one of the best voices in rock.

Led Zeppelin - Communication Breakdown

Going back to the roots of metal you can't ignore Led Zep. Page was a master of riffs and this is one of my favourites.

Here's the latest main post.

Let there be rock!

I'm Steve, the geeky guitarist.

I'll buy guitar picks for Steem Dollars

I've never been a huge fan of Diamond Head but must say that they have something unique, something that made them different from other bands.
I love the heaviest Queen songs. Keep Yourself Alive is a killer song!
Led Zeppelin's "Communication Breakdown" is one of the songs that changed my life. When I was a teenager there was a national tv program that used to broadcast concerts. Someday Led Zeppelin appeared on that program. It was a Black & White concert from a danish TV appearance. Four songs, starting with this "Communication Breakdown". What the f*** I though! It's awesome! At the moment I started recording my VHS. Next weeks and months my VHS played again and again those songs, and I started researching more Led Zeppelin music. Since then I'm a Led Zeppelin fan... 'til I die.
Thanks for sharing great music, and have a great #metalweekend!

Let me share that danish concert. Enjoy!

I am not super familiar with much from Diamond head but listening the song you posted (first time I had heard it) it has similarity to Opeth (one of my favorite bands) but much much earlier.

I know Queen has a huge following and fan base but for what ever reason I was never one found the appreciation that everyone else did. For some reason the only Queen song I like is "A kind of Magic". Don't know why but just how it is LOL.

Can never go wrong with any Zeppelin song IMO! If I had to pin down my favorites they might be The Rover and 10 Years Gone.

Great picks I love seeing what people on Steemit in the rock / metal community are enjoying!!

=)

I saw Queen live twice and they were some of the best shows I've seen. Wish I'd seen Zep, but I did see Page and Plant play a lot of the old stuff.

I didn't realise this Metal Weekend was a tag thing! Ill do one myself before the weekend is over but let me comment on your choices.

I have heard of Diamond Head but never actively sought out their music. He does sound a little like Freddie but the song was more on the progressive side than Queen, good choice. It also ends in five minutes but the clip is more than 7.5 minutes! Editing error I think.

Queen: I am not a huge fan, but I do remember Seven Seas of Rhye entering the charts in 1974.. damn I'm old.. and I do like some of their singles, I don't know this particular song though. Agree Freddie's voice is very distinctive and unique.

Led Zep - now here's a band I have tried to get on with in the past but again nothing gripped me except Stairway and Kashmir. They have such a huge following so why cant I hear it... I don't know..

It would be boring if we all liked the same things. If I don't like any music I don't have to listen to it

The Metal Weekend is great idea though. If you pick up on just one song you may discover a new band or artist you have never heard of before. I could really use a new one to jump on, it's not happened to me recently.

You can go down a rabbit hole with Youtube. One song leads to many more. It's the main way I listen to new stuff these days.

Trust me I have tried. I seem to be wired up differently from most people. I intend to do an article on this topic. Keep watching!

It would be great if that library you mentioned is still issuing vinyls. Most libraries that I know have obviously archived them and would only issue them to premium users who atleast have a good history with the said library.
I mean it is obviously understandable that they would have to take precautions with forty years old records still it would nice to find a place for borrowing older vinyls - originals I mean.

I wouldn't be surprised if they sold most of it as they moved to CD and they would get worn out anyway. I still have a stack of vinyl, including Queen and Led Zep.

Probably. Old collections in right condition can be worth a lot.
I hope the best for your collection and of course you as well!

Great choices, takes me back quite a few years, thanks, JerryT

Oh, I still miss Freddy!

YES! YES! YES!
KEEP MYSELF ALIVE
GREAT CHOICE OF MUSIC

I generally discourage SHOUTING, but it's justified with rock. You need to boost your reputation a bit

I just saw your post and I have to participate in this! I posted some KMFDM! Glad I met you!

I was always very into heavy metal, and heavy metal is full of emotion and extremes, and I think that's the same in dance music. And this is a great collection you have got here. Feel the beats ,feel the music.

he sang like the gods

Wondering may be you are the god of music. I felt the energy! Great sound music
