Waltzing Matilda - Slim Dusty [Favourites of the Gillos]

A Sweet Old Man Sings the Civilization 6's Australia DLC Song!

Just kidding about that title, this song is actually a very old and very lovely Australian diddy. As a citizen of another Commonwealth country (Canada) I have a deep love and respect for the Australian people. From Men at Work's classic song "Down Under" to their landmark  National Firearms Programme Implementation Act 1996 which saw a virtual end to mass shootings, Australia is pretty great.

Fans of Civilization 6 will recognize this song as the background music that plays throughout the Australian Civ's gameplay (video first look at Australia).

I first heard a rendition of this song in a video that appears later on this series, Axis of Awesome's Four Chord Songs. It's hilarious how even old songs ascribe to a few chords that just sound good to my ears. Waltzing Matilda is a beautiful song, and this video shows a performance by a fantastic singer.

Slim Dusty passed away in 2002, RIP, but his beautiful interpretation of Waltzing Matilda lives on. Slim was the first Australian to win a Gold Record, first to have an international hit record, and earned these other honors:

  • Made a Member of the Order of the British Empire and an Officer of the Order of Australia for services to entertainment.
  • The first artist broadcast from space when astronauts played his rendition of Waltzing Matilda from Space Shuttle Columbia as it passed over Australia on its maiden flight in 1981.
  • The winner of an unequalled 38 Golden Guitar awards from 72 nominations at the Tamworth Country Music Festival.
  • One of the earliest members of Australia's country music Roll of Renown.
  • The achiever of more Gold Record and Platinum Record Awards than any other Australian artist.
  • Inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame and the ARIA Special Achievement Award.
  • The Royal Australian Mint issued a coin celebrating his life.
  • Slim Dusty 's image was featured on an Australia Post, postage stamp

Interesting song. Although I dont like it, my body is automatically moving on the tunes.

It's not a tune for everyone, it's very very old, but it's a classic. I'm glad you could appreciate it (on some level) haha.

It is for a reason this tune is still their and played, since it has this magic in it that triggers our brains, wether we like it or not :)

Check out my other post about 4 Chord songs - certain chords do just trigger our brains!

For some reason the video vanished. I can't edit it, so here is the video!
