I'm currently working on a "Bjork: WORST TO BEST" right now, which is a part of an ongoing series where I go over the discography of various artists, ranking their core studio albums from worst to best. Here's a Radiohead: WORST TO BEST I did last year:
In some ways, ranking this legendary Icelandic singer's catalog is pretty easy; Björk hasn't really ever dropped a terrible album, ya know? But I guess that also makes the task of picking the best one pretty difficult. Either way, it got me wondering what your favorite Björk album is. Is it the versatile and bold Post? The intergalactic and highly conceptual Biophilia? The risky and vocally complex Medulla? Or are you going with a more tried and true pick like Homogenic and Vespertine?
Comment with your thoughts, and feel absolutely free to elaborate on why a particular album resonates with you.
Below is a selection of standout tracks across Björk's discography that have stuck with me over the years. Enjoy!
I love Biophilia and Medulla..... so much..... because, I think they are the most the most experimental album by bjork...... and because the last two album (Vulnicura and Utopia) very ballady..... I just guess the next album will be very ballady also (which is I enjoy it too).......
Waiting the list....... from you......
which nacionality are this album man
Do you mean nationality of Bjork???? She is from Iceland.....
Biophilia, it's the only one that is enjoyable front to back for me. The rest of her discography is more song to song but Biophilia has so many "bangers" for lack of a better word
I've been a bjork fan for 20 years, so this feels odd to say, but Biophilia. The way it's constructed is so beautiful, but tumultuous, and every track that brings in a beat just goes to war. When Vulnirica came out, and she stated it was a break up album, it put Biophilia into perspective and I understood it so much more: it was the pre-break up album. Her relationship unravelling as she tried to save it and herself. I keep it on constant rotation.
I never see (or hear) Biophilia in that way....... need to revisit the album....
let me know your thoughts if you do! I could talk bjork all day!
thanks for the thoughtful reply!
Biophilia, most definitely.
I saw her live at a festival here in the UK back in 2013 and a large portion of her set was made up of tracks from that album! So, it has some very strong, very fond memories for me. I mean, I love all of her albums, but Biophilia has a special place in my heart!
To be honest, I don't hesitate for a second to say that I didn't like Volta. But that doesn't necessarily make it the worst album. Only in my eyes, or should that be ears actually?
Now, Björk's best album? 🤔
Errr...
Vespertine. Nah, scratch that...Post. Crap, screw that... I'm one of those:Homogenic. Oh efff, most definitely...Biophilia. Wait....Oh fuggetaboutit!
This.
Pssttt: Vespertine. But it's an emotional choice, not a musical one.
lol, it's HARD to pick, right?!??
I think you just became the first recipient of @steemitboard's still unreleased Steem's Understatement of the Week badge. ;)
To be honest, I think that Björk may be one of the most challenging artists in this aspect. That not in the least because she has continuously improved, both in telling a narrative and in her experimental sound, risk factor.
Where other great artists like Bowie and Zappa have often dropped turds because they may have become too experimental at times, Björk is also a perfectionist (and hated for it by many who didn't live up to her standards). Add to that her innovative element and I can not say that there's much Björk work I can not make time for to listen to in a focused way.
That said, maybe I should disclose that with close to 225k scrobbles on last.fm, Björk is my 5th most listened to artist. I may be biased.
Out of pure curiosity, I just checked the Spotify thumbs up ratings for her studio albums and go figure that Biophilia, which is possibly her best album composition, is among the lowest rated albums on average (I looked at track ratings). Post and Homogenic being among her highest rated albums, the latter despite many less plays than the former. Yet musically, they probably (definitely?) aren't up to par with Bowie's earlier releases. Utopia and Black Star would line up nicely in "best album" level tho. But that was an outlier for Bowie, while Björk has been much more constant than he was, even as early as in his second decade.
That woman is a perfect enigma. I wonder if she herself actually gets herself. Or knows how bloody darn excellent she is.
On my last.fm she's top, but only just ahead of Eels.
My favorite Björk album is Debut, mostly for nostalgic reasons. 😎
I think I have to pick Post as my favorite Bjork album. As much as I enjoy some of Bjork's other albums it's always Post that I end up coming back to, and I don't even know why, there's just some indescribable hold that album has over me.
Can I just take a second to point out that whatever spellchecker Steemit uses recognises Bjork as a word but, vespertine, which is a dictionary defined word, is not recognised. Am I the only one that finds that funny?
I like some of Bjork's stuff but I don't know enough to form a fair opinion. I just wanted to say how cool it is to see another relatively big Youtuber try out this platform. Your content is amazing, so I'm sure you'll do well. Best of luck!
thanks, man! :-)
good post......♥..
thanks!
I do love Vespertine, but they are all so different and each has its charms. I've seen her love twice and frankly ought to do that again. I've only just got the latest album and need to digest that.
seen her twice??!?! so jealous!
Fun posts! Tough to pick the "best" and I think a favorite would be more appropriate if some of her work with The Sugarcubes would be included in the line up. I prefer the Icelandic version of "Birthday"
Steemit, where did my text go?!? Fun Post! Tough to pick the "best" and I think favorite would be more appropriate if the line up included some of her work with The Sugarcubes. Greetings!
I really like "Post" and "Vespertine", although is very difficult to choose between Bjork albums
