A performance during a recital by a Chinese school mate (sorry for the poor video quality!). There are two pieces of music that she played , one is 'Fisherman's Song at Dusk', and I forgot the name of the other song( ̄ー ̄;
The guzheng is a Chinese instrument that is played by plucking the strings. Several instruments from surrounding countries has its roots based on the guzheng, like like the Japanese 'koto'.
Ancient Chinese believed that playing the guzheng helped in cultivating a person's character, skills, etc, which was why this instrument was a favorite among the high-ranking families. A noble daughter who displayed excellent skills in playing the guzheng (along with skills like being a picture-perfect lady and being magnanimous, blah, blah, blah) was considered as prime marriage material.
(So holding a music competition with the prize as marriage is okay???)
I'd like to play this instrument, but I'm afraid that it probaby is a pain to maintain (too many strings, imagine if all breaks on you...). Just kidding, I'd jump at a chance to learn how to play this.
For more info on the guzheng, you can check out this site.
