Who doesn't know ABBA ?

All people definitely know about this legendary Group Band. But do not worry, if you do not know this band, @WorldOfMusic will review about this legend group.

ABBA was formed in Stockholm, Sweden in 1972 by Benny Andersson, Bjorn Ulvaeus, Agnetha Faltskog and Anni-frid Lyngstad. The ABBA name is an abbreviation taken from the first letters of all four personnel.

Before forming ABBA, the four ABBA personnel were already known to Swedish music public. Benny is the vocalist and keyboardist of Hep Stars while Bjorn is the guitarist of the group Hootenanny Singers, the beautiful Agnetha himself began to gain fame when he got his role as Mary Magdalene in the musical Jesus Christ Superstar. While Anni-Frid is a famous jazz singer after winning a national-level festival in Sweden there.

The popularity of ABBA began when they appeared in Eurovision contest even though they were only ranked 3rd only. and their song "Ring" became hit, next year they tried their luck again at Eurovision and this time they won first place with a song called Waterloo.

In 1975, they released S.O.S which eventually became very hits not only in America and Britain, but also in Spain as well as Germany. A series of hits were released later such as I Do, I Do, I Do, Mamma Mia and Fernando following after the success of this S.O.S.

In 1976, ABBA released the masterpiece of Dancing Queen, the biggest export from Sweden whose album sales could make them richer than the Volvo car manufacturer. "Dancing Queen" jumped to the top of the sequence of songs all over the country. ABBA turned into a constellation that invested everywhere, including a bicycle factory and an art gallery, BTW so come on let's hear ABBA - Dancing Queen...

ABBA music is called "Europop" which is very much different from the pop songs in general. Anni-Frid voiced mezzo, Agnetha soprano, so the mixture of their vocals sounded very beautiful. Unlike other pop groups that record dozens of songs to collapse into albums, ABBA only writes 12 songs a year.

Andersson and Ulvaeus and group manager, Stig Anderson, created most of ABBA's songs.

ABBA Popular songs

  • Waterloo (1974); SOS, Mamma Mia, and Fernando
  • (all of 1975); Dancing Queen, Money, Money, Money, and Knowing Me Knowing You
  • (all of 1976); The Name of the Game and Take a Chance on Me
  • (both in 1977); And The Winner Takes It All and Super Trouper
  • (both in 1980). These songs are marked by interesting melodies and rich orchestrations. Although based in Sweden, ABBA recorded their songs in English.

In 1978, Benny and Anni-Frid were married, while Agnetha and Bjorn divorced two months later (they married in 1971). However, three years later (1981) it was the turn of the divorced Benny and Anni-Frid. The rift of a couple's personal relationships had a direct impact on the destruction of ABBA. They tried to survive and planned to release the album Opus 10 in 1986, but canceled. ABBA officially broke up when their label, Polar sold to Polydor in 1990.

After breakup of this super group, each personnel is busy in their own musical activities. However, none of them were able to repeat ABBA's success. Nevertheless, the popularity of ABBA itself did not die with it's dissolution from their group. Their songs are still being reproduced by other groups or singers to date.

ABBA entered the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2010. In 2013, ABBA The Museum, part of the Swedish Music Hall of Fame, opened in Stockholm. The museum features stage costumes worn by ABBA members as well as ABBA music and videos.
