Here @Worldofmusic want to try to briefly explain the definition, characteristics, history, and development of Post-Metal music.
Yeah, Post-Metal is a mixture of post-rock and heavy metal music, with elements of music from shoegaze, industrial metal and sludge. And this music is characterized by guitar distortion, atmospherics, gradual evolution of song structures and minimal emphasis on vocals. Most songs follow an intense crescendos format on a simple chord sequence but can include a powerful riffing section. The term "Post-Metal" was originally introduced by Aaron Turner who was none other than the frontman of Isis and the owner of Hydra Head Records. Initially, Turner introduced the term "thinking's man metal" with more avant-garde metal music but trying to move away from conventional metal music.
Post-Metal is one of the term new genres that are still developing up to now, whose names are also known as "instro-metal", "postcore", "metal-gaze" metal and more. One of the originators is Isis that combines ambience and atmosphere into a unique musical style of metal music. Isis describes traditional post-rock music in his music but they feature more powerful hardcore music and stronger influences from sludge.
Aaron Turner initially also called Isis music as "avant-garde" or "drone-oriented rock" but different because the bass sound on Isis music is not as heavy and lazy as most drone bands. And fans and music critics try to give a new label on Isis music that is Post-Metal. And this new music genre itself is followed by other bands similar to Isis like Pelican, Cult of Luna and Rosetta.
But long before the Isis with the Celestial release in 2000, pre-Metal Post (not yet Post-Metal) was first recognized by Helmet with the album Meantime (1992) and Betty (1994) whose musical character approaches the musical structure of post-metal but they are better known for alternative metal / post-hardcore genre. Post-metal history itself can also be brought close by Sludge music mosmosphere (Atmospheric Sludge) of some bands that bring the texture of post-rock music with a louder guitar sound.
The post-metal term was also originally used in England which describes other metal genres as post-metal but refers to other names such as "industrial soundscape music" and "soundscape metal". But then the post-metal term from England was defeated from band band with post-metal term from US there is more effective than band from England. So now the post-metal term from the US is known.
