It helps to have a little knowledge in photography, but some people have a natural touch for photography, and it comes naturally. I don't think being good at taking pictures requires fundamental knowledge, but I'm sure it helps. My best advice would be to experiment around, see what captures you get the best reactions from, and hone in on what you are best at taking pictures of, and ensure to practice as much as you would with anything else you are trying to master.
