Mercury and Venus are closer to the sun than Earth while the other planets are farther away. You can remember the order of the planets with the mneumonic "My Very Educated Mother Just Showed Us Nine". Each of the first letters in each word represents the planets: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune.
