There are numerous reasons why overpopulation can occur but it basically boils down to an increase in birth rates and a decrease in death rates. Here are a few other causes of overpopulation in the world
1. Improving medical facilities: Modern medicine is getting better and better everyday and saving lives has never been easier. This has resulted in a drastic decrease in death rates and as such too many people are being born every day and it's not being matched with an equivalent death rate. As far as birth rates go, advancements in fertility treatments has also made it easier for people to have kids and although this is a good thing, it also further increases the birth rates.
2. Immigration: Places like the US, Canada and The United Kingdom are popular places for people to migrate to because the infrastructure and economy as well as she of these places make it easier to succeed and raise a family. As such, a lot of people tend to migrate to these areas and in so doing they cause overpopulation in such places. Even in my home country of Nigeria, a place like Lagos is vastly overpopulated because of the same reasons. People will always flock to where they see greener pastures.
3. Lack of family planning: This usually occurs with people who have poor educational backgrounds and as such don't understand the concept of family planning. These people tend to have more kids than they can take care of and end up contributing to the overpopulation of an area. In certain places in Nigeria, the wealth of a man is measured by how many children he has, irrespective of whether or not he can take care of them. Some people even give birth to more kids so that they can serve as farm hands on their privates farms.

I hope this helps.
Too many new births vs not enough deaths
This leads to a net gain in the world population and eventually overpopulation.
As people live longer due to medical advancements the "balance" between life and death continues to shift and leads to overpopulation.
