ফেরির জন্য ঘণ্টার পর ঘণ্টা অপেক্ষা করা কেমন একঘেয়েমি ও ক্লান্তিকর, তা ভুক্তভোগীরাই জানে। আর ফেরি চলাচলের জন্য আবহাওয়া অনুকুল না হলে তো কথাই নেই। গোটা রাতটাই নদীর কিনারে কাটাতে হয়। তখন মনে হয়, ইস! গাড়িটি যদি পানির ভেতর দিয়ে যেতে পারত! তবে প্রথমবারের মতো এমন সমস্যার একটি অভিনব সমাধান দিয়েছে ব্রিটেনের একটি কোম্পানি। তারা অ্যাম্ফিকোচ নামের একটি উভচর বাস তৈরি করেছে। এটি জলে ও স্থলে চলতে পারে। স্কটল্যান্ডের জর্জ স্িনথ উদ্ভাবিত ৫০ আসনবিশিষ্ট উভচর বাসটি অন্যান্য বাসের মতোই সড়কপথে চলতে পারে। এ সময় এর স্বাভাবিক গতি থাকে ঘণ্টায় ৭০ কিলোমিটার। তবে বিস্নয় আর উত্তেজনার পালাটি শুরু হয় সাগরে বা নদীর পানিতে চলার সময়। স্থলভাগ থেকে পানিতে নামার সঙ্গে সঙ্গেই বাসটি চাকাগুলো গুটিয়ে নেয়। গোটা বাসটি তখন ভেলার মতো মনে হয়। এরপর পানিতে এয়ার পিস্টনের মাধ্যমে শুরু হয় মসৃণ গতিতে ভেসে চলা। এ সময় এর গতি দাঁড়ায় ঘণ্টায় ১০ মাইল। সড়ক কিংবা নদী−উভয় পথেই বাসটি ডিজেল ইঞ্জিনচালিত। কোম্পানির ব্যবস্থাপনা পরিচালক স্টিভ স্িনথ জানান, বাসটি তৈরি করতে তাঁদের ছয় বছর লেগেছে। তবে কোম্পানি প্রতিবছর ১২টি করে গাড়ি নির্মাণ করবে বলে আশা করছে। প্রতিটি গাড়ির দাম পড়বে দুই লাখ ৮০ হাজার পাউন্ড। কোম্পানির পক্ষ থেকে জানানো হয়, পানির নিচে যেকোনো প্রতিবন্ধকতা থেকে রক্ষা পেতে এটি তিন হাজার ৫০০ ঘণ্টা পর্যন্ত নিজের অবস্থানে টিকে থাকতে পারে।
