Virtual Fishing Journal: Wild Waters

Game: DayZ
Zone: Namalsk (Modded)
Cycle: Snow Day
Water Type: Salt

I joined a modded server with my friend on DayZ. It took us awhile to meet up but after several attempts to find each other, we finally met on the beach. The server was modded to be permanent winter/freezing conditions so after warming up by a campfire, we raided a base on an island.

The lit flare warmed us up but wouldn't last forever

After my friend and I finished looting we swam back to the mainland. On the shore there was an overturned boat with a boonie hat laid ontop of it. Inside the hat was a 'Pristine Fishing Hook'! I pocketed it and kept moving to a nearby house for cover. We were equipped with plenty of gear but we lacked food.

Our saving grace

I mentioned the hook I found and my friend walked out to begin gathering wood to make a fishing pole. Once it was constructed I went to a nearby pier and began fishing!

As simple as can be in the wilderness
Also appropriately placed photo

I had no bait so it took more than a few tries before I reeled in our meal. Mackerel was what I caught. 2 of them.

My friend fileted them and set the pieces on the fireplace to cook.

We were saved!

The smokestack from the fireplace caught the attention of other players, which was quickly followed by bursts of gunfire as they all came across each other trying to close in on our current 'safehouse'.

The gunfire drew closer as the filets neared 'cooked' status. By the time the filets finished cooking somebody began firing at the house we were in! We grabbed our meals and ran out of the house into the woods.

Make for the trees!

Pursuit was guaranteed...

Personal thoughts on Fishing in DayZ

I wasn't expecting Fishing to appear in a game about looting and survival on a zombie infested island with wild animals(and players) roaming the world. So it was a bit of a surprise to me when the skill was there and saved us from starvation. The mechanics were simple, just wait for a circle to fill and click/hold Mouse 1(LMB) to reel in whatever was caught

The exciting prompt to start Fishing

I would like to attempt a roleplay as a fisherman on the island. Handing out food to players passing by and attempting conversation but I think many of the players are the 'shoot first, ask questions later' type(From what I've experienced after a few more playthroughs).

It was a fun experience though and I want to share more of my 'entries' as I continue to try out the fishing in different games.

Thank you for reading.

Happy Fishing!
