Elise bridge / Elisenbrücke
The bridge consists of two parts, with a centerpiece on the inhabited Leopoldineninsel. The part not visible in the picture crosses the backwaters. In the last days of the war, it was blown up to stop the advance of the Americans, who erected a makeshift bridge a few hundred yards upriver. After a total refurbishment several years ago, it is the main gateway from the north and west into the city and an eternal bottleneck.
Die Brücke besteht aus zwei Teilen, mit einem Mittelstück auf der bewohnten Leopoldineninsel. Das nicht im Bild sichtbare Teil überquert das Altwasser. In den letzten Kriegstagen wurde sie gesprengt um den Vormarsch der Amerikaner aufzuhalten die jedoch ein paar hundert Meter flußaufwärts eine Behelfbrücke errichteten. Nach einer Totalsanierung vor einigen Jahren ist sie die Hauptzufahrt von Norden und Westen in die Stadt und ein ewiges Nadelöhr.
After the underpass we are now in the hell, as this way is called. A few meters further and we can now look at the bridge from the other side.
Nach der Unterquerung befinden wir uns nun in der Hölle, wie dieser Weg heißt. Ein paar Meter weiter und wir können die Brücke nun von der anderen Seite aus betrachten.
The last flood was about the middle of these windows, now they are provided with a special flood protection, which is used when needed.
Das letzte Hochwasser war etwa in Höhe der Mitte dieser Fenster, jetzt sind sie mit einem speziellen Hochwasserschutz versehen, der bei Bedarf eingesetzt wird.
Along the Danube runs this narrow path, which we now follow to the end of the old town. The Danube Island ends here and divides the Danube in the quiet part, which runs along the Danube quay and the backwater with the strong current.
Entlang der Donau verläuft dieser schmale Weg, den wir nun bis ans Ende der Altstadt beschreiten. Die Donauinsel endet hier und teilt die Donau in den ruhigen Teil, der am Donaukai entlangläuft und das Altwasser mit der starken Strömung.
