Hey Hive! I'm Appalachain.
I've been meaning to do this for what seems like a week now. Not really good at talking about myself, but I'm gonna give it a shot. This will probably end up being mostly pictures, but we'll see how it turns out.
Who am I? Well, guess that all depends on who you ask. I'm a lot of things. I'm a lot of things to a lot of people. Never did fit neatly into boxes, and often seem to be contradictory, but, If something doesn't fit, it doesn't make it into my worldview.
Christian, anarchist, capitalist, outdoorsman, union tradesman, husband, dad, introvert, stoic (of sorts).... Guess you could say I like to think big and live simple.
Grew up mostly with my grandparents. I never got heavy into genealogy, but I love listening to older folks tell stories. I look at old family pictures, and wish I could know what they knew. I try to soak up all I can, but God, in his infinite wisdom saw it fit to temper my love of knowledge and wisdom with a REALLY shot memory (haha!) If I'm the most ignorant guy in the room, I consider that a good thing.
Been married to my wife, @samks for going on 14 years, and we have a 13 year old son, @t07. We also have 2 dogs. A mountain cur named Dixie, and a German Shepherd named Kiera
(She doesn't like thunder.)
Even though I don't get the opportunity much, I love to hunt, fish, and hike. I'm happiest when I'm in the woods, or doing just about anything outside.
(Me and the boy taking a brake on one of our hikes)
(My Dad.)
I also enjoy making stuff. My artistic abilities are lacking, but looking back at the end of the day and being able to see something standing satisfies me. I'm just not built for office work or hyper repetitive tasks. It burns me out REALLY fast because it's like running on a treadmill. A whole lot of running and gettin' nowhere fast.
Residential construction and Pipe trades have been my main focus, but I really like to weld. Here are a few of the projects I've worked on.
(Stuck at work during a snowstorm, so I made a made a snowman inside about half the size of a dime. Working on my heat control.)
(Got to meet the guy from the show "Bitchin' Rides" when I worked for Borla Exhaust. Rockin the anarchyball shirt that day. lol.)
Photography interests me too. Not great, just me and the ol' cell phone, but the things you can do with light and angles amazes me. Here are a few of my favorite shots.
(Playing with a filter.)
I have an interest in Tech too. I assume most folks here do. The biggest reason is I don't feel like I understand it very well. I do know a good thing when I see it though, and Hive is a good thing! Seems like these words get over used, but they're SO important! Increasing privacy and decentralization are the keys to the future. The keys to our freedom. I'm so glad to be a part, however small, of moving that forward.
To close this off, I saw a challenge the other day to explain your screen name, and it seems like it makes sense to tagg that onto this post too.
Appalachain
It's a play on words. I still pronounce it "a-puh-latch-an" even though it's misspelled. It's to honor my Appalachian roots, but spelled "chain" as a nod to the future I believe blockchain tech. can help build.
Where in the appalachain are ya? Im in southwest virginia
Probably not far then! I'm in North East TN.
Near Johnson City?
Yep! Bristol?
HAHA.. I'm from Marion, originally, in Blacksburg/VT currently. So, just right up the road. State Line has the best steak in Bristol, imho.
Good to meet ya! Yep, I know Exactly where you're from. I don't get up to Bristol much. I worked at Permatile up there for a little bit years ago, and like to go to the drive in on occasion. Other than that, never have much reason to go. Next time I'm up that way, I'm gonna have to go now. I love a good steak!
Welcome to Hive homie!
Thanks man! After almost 4 years on Steem, I'm happy to be here!
I enjoyed your intro to hive. That is a pretty part of the country.
Thanks! Yea, The mountains are beautiful. Especially springtime when everything is fresh and turning green again.
Gotta love the great outdoors. I'm from Oregon but I've been to West Virginia and I've enjoyed my time there. I love the three generations in your photos, your, dad and son. Love it. So much story there.
How do you like Oregon? Never had the chance to go. Yea, I lived in WV for a few years. They have some good homegrown there! Good hunting too! Just stay away from Huntington. Full of meth heads now. 😞
I love Oregon. Love the people. Love the natural beauty it has. Oregon has lots of trees like upstate New York. The weather is similar to West Virginia. Yeah, there are some meth heads in Portland, OR. Many people in the smaller towns in Oregon are pretty nice as you would expect.
