The Labyrinth of the Minotaur

The story of Theseus and the Minotaur is undoubtedly one of the most famous Greek myths. There are multiple ways in which the story is told but the gist is that there was a King Minos who was forced to raise a son who has the body of a man and the face of a bull.

King minos managed to trap the minotaur in a labyrinth but he took the habit of sending in young men and women every year to be slaughtered by the beast. Theseus, prince of Athens, volunteered one year, and with the help of Ariadne, King Minos’ daughter, he succeeded in killing the beast and finding his way out of the maze.

Locations for the Labyrinth of the Minotaur

The exact location is not known for sure but there are two places:

  1. Kommos, believed by archaeologists to have been the site of Minos’s throne.

  2. Gortyn, a little further away from Kommos.
