Meet Our Newest Addition!!

in #naturalmedicine5 years ago (edited)

We have been wanting to add these for so long! It's been hard to come by because the nurseries around here sell out so fast. Even online was troublesome. Finally, we got some! These were a gift from my mother.

Meet.... Jefferson and Theta Hazelnut. The Hazelnut family will be planted in our food forest tomorrow. They arrived to our homestead safe and sound and are now looking out the back glass storm door, readjusting to the light (and waiting for the current storm to pass - high winds).

{Sorry for the poor quality pic. I'm not sure what is going on with my camera but I changed a setting of sorts and can't figure out how to fix it!}

We are so very excited to have these new additions. We don't eat a lot of meat and so every bit of extra protein we can grow is amazing. Apart from the little boost in protein intake Hazelnuts have a host of other benefits. They are an excellent healthy fat making them great for heart health and maintaining healthy cholesterol levels. They are also high in antioxidants which helps ward off free radicals (fighting cancer). They have the highest count of proanthocyanidins compared to other nuts. Hazelnuts are also a brain-boosting powerhouse containing high amounts of vitamin E, manganese, thiamine, folate, and fatty acids. Because of their high vitamin E and miners, it makes them an excellent food for helping to maintain strong hair and bones, smooth skin, and strong nails. Each little morsel of a nut has so many benefits but apart from that, they are absolutely delicious.

These will be cherished here at our homestead. We are blessed to have them. These are fruit-bearing size for this variety so there is a good chance we will get a handful of nuts or two next season. These varieties stay on the shorter side for hazelnuts, capping out at no more then 10 ft tall, which makes harvesting easy. Another amazing feature to both Theta and Jefferson varieties are their disease and pest resistance. These have been bred to resist the common fungus and diseases that often plague hazelnuts in our area.

I'm seriously looking forward to watching these two flourish and provide us with their delicious morsels of yumminess. :)

With lots of love
~Bren

I've always liked the idea of hazelnuts, but every time I try them, something in the taste is not nice in my mouth. :((

I hope your hazelnuts thrive and prosper!

Ahhh I love this! I love that you named them too. Oh god. Resisting temptation to order hazelnuts.. besides, hubby is allergic..

Haha! We name a lot of our plants. I know it's a funny thing be we talk to them and all. I truly believe plants can feel your energy and intentions. The names of these two happen to be the variety but it was just so perfect we kept them as their names.
