Otto the the six-month-old, two feet, seven inch octopus at the Sea Star Aquarium in Coburg, Germany has grabbed my attention. A number of articles have said that Otto had been annoyed by the bright lights shining into his aquarium and that’s why he shot water at them, but aquarium officials said that this is incorrect. They said that Otto grew up in this aquarium and is very used to his environment. Furthermore they only use special aquarium lights which aren’t very bright and Otto’s exhibit is equipped with a dark overhang and caves. Otto had discovered he could turn them off perhaps even as a new game, perhaps to deal with his boredom. He has been being unruly for a while. The moment I read this I thought I wanted to learn more about Old Otto the trouble making octopus.
Elfriede Kummer one of the directors who was taking part in shifts sleeping on the floor to find out what was causing the mysterious blackouts night after night. The short-circuit night after night had them completely baffled the electricians as well as staff at the Sea Star Aquarium said,"It was a serious matter because the short was shorting out the electricity supply to the whole aquarium and that threatened the lives of the other animals when water pumps ceased to work" said Kummer
Turns out between juggling hermit crabs, completely re-arranging his tank to make it better suit his own taste or even throwing rocks at the tank glass. Otto has even began a life of crime by stealing the aquarium scrubbers that he then tried to clean his exhibit from the inside and has decided not to give them back. He found the ingenuity time, will and opportunity to climb onto the rim of his tank. Otto then discovered he was big enough to swing onto the edge of his tank and shoot out a carefully directed jet of water and thus shorting out the overhead light shining into his aquarium at night.
It turns out the aquarium staff had trained Otto to aim and squirt water, but at visitors, not at the lights. Otto normally loves to play with aquarium visitors by splashing water at them, which keeps him busy. But during this off season, Otto has ‘complained’ about the lack of visitors by giving aquarium employees a hard time and constantly seeking their attention. "Otto himself had made the connection between turning out the lights and causing a commotion" Kummer says. Now the people of Coburg are coming up with new ways to keep Otto occupied, like giving him a chess board. That kept him entertained for quite a while. But then, one day he was like, nope, I don't want the chess board. And he just threw it out of his aquarium tank. I am really liking this guy. He has moxie.
Somehow I do not think this is the last we will be hearing about our boy Otto. seems he has lots more things to explore and learn. So until the next adventure your fans are waiting to see what trouble you get into next.
