Elephants Are Scared of Bees

in #nature7 years ago

Apparently Elephants aren't fan of bees, in fact they are scared shitless of them, but for a good reason, because see, the bees we know are rather harmless and somewhat cute, African bees are however no joke and not the guest you'd want on an happy family picnic.

Even though Elephants have pretty thick skin (in the literal sense at least, I have no idea about their socio-cultural sensitivities), bees can still hurt them on softer spots such as the trunk, mouth and even on their freaking eyes, imagine the pain. This however is a good thing. Why? You ask, followed by "are you out of your fucking mind, you crazy heartless psycho?"

The reason this is a good thing is because it seems like conservationists are smartly using this fear of bees to protect Elephants from conflict with farmers, who won't think twice before shooting down this big elegant beasts, and that's way more lethal than the occasional bee sting. Conservationists are now setting up beehives (some of them are fake) every 20 meters on farming land, keeping up to 80% of elephants away from those farmer's tempting crops.
