Zombie Deer - by @bigbear

in #nature7 years ago (edited)

Mad cow disease is a disease that appeared in the United Kingdom in 1980 – 90 people ate the diseased cows and hundreds of people were infected.

Now there are deer dying from a neurological disease in many U.S states and people are starting to wonder if this could also be a disease that can infect people.

The infected chronic disease is spread by something called (prions) but they do not move away from the animal very easily.

There is now a studies being done, as it is getting worse more than 21 states are already infected by these Reindeer and the test being done shows that 3 out of every 5 monkeys who ate the infected meat have been infected.

This disease was first discovered in Colorado in 1967 and is also known as “Zombie deer disease”

The “prion” in the elk may still be changing and it may take some time, but the suggestion has been made that a test should be done on the meat before it is given to humans to eat.

We never know when this prion reaches its capacity to be able to affect humans.

When prions fold abnormally they can change and make the prion enter the elk or deer and if eaten by humans it can be spread.

Moreover, some studies have shown that researchers can artificially evolve the prions that cause chronic wasting disease (either in a test tube or animal models) so that the altered prion proteins can cause human proteins to misfold, Zabel said.

This suggests that if chronic-wasting-disease prions evolve in nature, they could potentially cross the species barrier, he said.

Should we be eating deer meat? That is the question.

The CBC says it would be much better to have this meat tested before eating just to be sure that there is no problem.

There is also the school of thought, which if an animal that appears a little funny have that zombie look, do not shoot it as a hunter for food.

These animals get this zombie look on their faces and seem not to be scared of humans as they have this neurological disease.

This is sad but it is a fact that there are hundreds of them that have been discovered.

good info.We need to do more research work in this field in order to prevent not only humans but also animals from this disease. Thanks friend for sharing.I hope you will provide more info related to this....

agree with you

Its a brain disorder in adult cattle that may be spread to humans through diseased meat. It requires immediate medical attention

yea @introvert for the disease not to be spread, we need not to protect human being alone but also the animal.

cow is a very useful animal thanx for share this post and agree with you

great information - this field keeping in mind the end goal to avoid people as well as creatures from this disease .
Thanks companion for sharing.I trust you will give more information identified with this....@alirazaamjad

Many thanks for the share @brightideas... a very enlightening article :O)

Perhaps the scariest thing about the BSE / Mad Cow Disease crisis in the 80's / 90's here in the UK, was UK Government Ministers not only eating beef burgers live on TV, trying to prove and brush off any potential 'health risk' that could come from eating British Beef... but also feeding it to their children... live on British TV.

This was of course a publicity stunt, made in an effort to quell any hysteria that might result from the name Mad Cow Disease... and the sight of British Cows not being able to walk properly... let alone stand.

It's fine if you are an adult, and you want to eat potentially infected meat, and run the risk of acquiring CJD / Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease, said to be the human form of BSE... but to force feed it to your children... or manipulate them into eating it in front of TV cameras, and therefore the nation... with no rigorous testing of that meat to check that it's not infected... merely to score a political goal... is an absolute dereliction of parent duty... and and absolutely disgraceful thing to do... and to their own children too.

Far greater testing of meat is needed to avoid potential human infection, and with the standards of meat testing likely to be lower after Brexit, to allow US meat to be sold in the UK... the possibility of this spreading to the UK is far greater.

Sad to hear,
It damages the brain and spine in cattle

Humans usually affect the CJD type by eating infected brain or spinal tissue, which can make sponge-like holes in the brain.

thank you for your information friend. keep working still successful

Nice article & info 👍

very middle-aged for humans to eat cattle attacked by neurological disease, because the virus in the meat can be contagious, unlike other diseases caused by tapeworm.

It's very informative. I have lots of interest in Mad Cow Disease, it's not only nice but also concerning news that new disease have discovered. I hope this disease have studied and found curable measures as soon as possible.

Good information. we need to go into serious research on this infection to prevent further destruction on our animals

yeah i remember that disease. those were terrible days :( Although there were not much people effected, thanks to media they reflected the issue like it was just behind us.

Didn't know the prion was getting that bad in the USA, i still need to do some research about prions, haven't heard about the topic in a while, ever since the mad cow disease, thanks for the info buddy. i wrote a post about antibiotics and super bacteria, if you have the time i would love to hear your thought on the topic, only want your input, nothing more
Keep up the good work @brightideas :D

es impresionante lo que uno no sabe. buen post borther

excellent write up.but it doesnt go with only this particular animal.thousand s of animals are going to be extinct very shortly from this planet.think its high time to think of the issue and build awareness.
