Hi gang. First off, I want to apologize for my near week-long hiatus from DNF posts. Kylene and I had our wedding reception yesterday and we've been frantically working to get ready for it. We had it at our property and ky spent the week making all of the decorations and I spent the week putting natural stone veneer on our house. It's a big relief to have the reception over though. I should be back to the daily posts now, once again.
Anyway, for today's Daily Nature Fix I'll be sharing one of the top 5 life experiences I've ever had: Seeing the Northern Lights. We saw them last year on our winter trip to Iceland. It was one of two reasons we went back to the country in the winter after visiting during the summer already. You can only see the lights in the winter (because there is no nighttime during the summer) and the other reason was to tour some glacier ice caves that become too unstable in the summer months.
Now, I've said it before and I'll say it again: I'm not a photographer by any means. These photos aren't incredible, but I definitely had to do everything I could to capture our experience.
We were there for some 8 nights, and on each one the skies were either too cloudy, or the aurora borealis was just inactive. We were about to give up hope on seeing them, when a window in the clouds opened for a around an hour and we got the show of a lifetime.
^^^A close up of the lights.
They started right around dusk at about 8:00pm. At first they looked like a faint cloud and as we kept an eye on it, it slowly morphed into other shapes... and the darker out it got, the brighter the lights became.
It's impossible to try and explain what they looked like in person. There is nothing "like" it in the world to compare it to. The best I could do is that it looked a massive lava lamp of transparent, neon lights.

For both Kylene and myself, seeing the northern lights was right at the top of our bucket lists. I'm so glad we are able to put a check mark by that one... but we've been jonesing to see them again!

Sangat menakjubkan
I like the comparison to a lava lamp.
Thanks. At one point the lights stretched from one horizon, overhead, and down to the opposite one. It looked awesome when it was morphing around.
Aurora 😍. I have a thing for Aurora 👌🏽 Perfect
Me too, especially now!
Wow!Amazing!!
Thanks @childcare!
I love the lights! I have been chasing them photographically for years, but have had limited success. Your captures are awesome!
Thanks @davidwilliams! I've since learned a lot more about nighttime photography that I wish I knew then... guess I'll just have to go back!
Hehe every photo from my collection elicits the same sentiment from me. I wish I knew then what I know now. That's the nature of the game I guess. Always learning, always improving.
You may not be a photographer, but i'm still jealous you were able capture those shots! I can just imagine how amazing it must have been to see it in person!
I wish the photos would do the lights more justice. I tried to take video, but they just didn't show up. :-/
Now that's everyone's bucket list.
these photos are gorgeous! I wanna see aroa
This looks so beautiful <3
Dudes, while I do love your pix on the northern lights, I would also love to see some pix on your putting natural stone veneer on our house, and the end results of all your hard workings... Cheerings Glen.S
Ha! You got it. It was such a pain in the ass. The stones were tiny, for one, AND they weren't squared off or anything. Almost every piece I had to grand notches and shapes into so that they'd fit tight as we were going for the dry stack look with no mortar showing. Here is a before:
And after:
Glad the clouds opened up for you! I hope to see these on my travels in the next year and a half.
I truly hope you get to spot them! But yeah, we saw them on the last night of the last day of the trip. We flew out early the next morning.
this is just awesome! It is one of my life dreams to see the aurora borealis at least for once in my life! Thank you for sharing these beautiful pictures! upvoted and followed!
Thanks @twolittlebirds! Iceland is a great place to spot them. We may have a chance to see them again at the end of the year as we're thinking about going to Norway.
Been there this summer :) Beautiful even without the lights!
That is so beautiful! I'm glad you got a chance to experience it. There is no substitute for being in nature, anytime. The pictures were really nice, but i bet being there in person was outstanding. We are following you, adventure on!
