The Common Redstart is a small attractive bird easily recognizable by its bright chestnut tail that is constantly on the move. Its back and wings are grey with a white forehead. The female has similar colours but is much paler.
The Redstart is insectivorous catching insects on the wing. They arrive here in April and leave for their migration grounds in the South of France and North Africa in October.
The Redstart will nest in trees but also between rocks on the ground. Their nest are built from grasses and roots and lined with feather and hair. They lay approximately 6 bright blue eggs speckled with small orange spots.
Black Redstart
This bird is very similar to a robin in looks but is found in open fields and scrub land.

interesting
Redstarts are immediately identifiable by their bright orange-red tails, which they often quiver. Breeding males look smart, with slate grey upper parts, black faces and wings and an orange rump and chest.
