The Kumana National Park is known for its lagoons (Bagura, Andarakalei, Itikala, Yakkala) and the plains. The park, still called East Yala, is also famous for its amazing variety of birds. The park was abandoned for decades because of the internal conflict in Sri Lanka, but now has a new life and regains its former glory and popularity. Now the bungalows are being built in the regions of Tummulla, Kirigaleb, Okanda, and also campsites along Kambukkan Oya. The maximum number of people in the campsite who can stay there for up to 3 days is 10 people. It is planned to build a tourist center near the entrance to the park in Okanda.
A special attraction is Kumana Villa - a lake of 200 hectares, fed by the river Kambukkan Oya. In the mangroves of Kumana Vila, from May to June, you can observe the breeding of a large number of the inhabitants of the park. Among the observed bird species in Kumana there are pelicans, colorful storks, spoonbills, white ibises, herons, white herons, and hundreds of small cormorants. Very rare storks with a black neck can also be found in Kumana. Altogether, up to 255 bird species can be found in Kumana, and during April-July, annually, tens of thousands of birds migrate to the Kumana Creek. The park is also inhabited by an Indian crocodile, a shell tortoise, an Indian black turtle. Here you can find leopards. Vegetation in Kumana consists mainly of mangroves, trees of a kamboo and a fern of a karan, and also there it is possible to find marshy terrain. A total of 400 species of birds can be observed in Sri Lanka, 230 of which are residents of the island, and 23 are endemic species, that is, only in Sri Lanka.
Among the attractions of the park there is Kiri Pokuna - a small pond that serves as a source of water during the dry season and a kilometer away there is a small rock in the forest, called Kiri Pokuna Hela, in which is found a cave, overgrown with many legends and on the walls of which one can see the ancient Inscriptions of Buddhist monks who lived here thousands of years ago.
