INTO THE MANGROVES

in #nature7 years ago

It's summer time and everyone's trying to look hot in bikinis. Hopping from one island to another, swimming and diving like no other. Perhaps, there's no better way to indulge one's summer than those activities. That's what I thought until today.

At 5:00 in the morning, some teachers together with the students gathered around in Mactan Liberty Shrine for unified purpose: COASTAL CLEANUP.

Before we even got started, a beautiful scene left us in awe.

Nobody dared to spoil the moment as the sun was rising. It was as if a gift of nature as we were about to show care to it.

Timed passed quickly as everyone got hyped. Students were divided into teams with 5 members. Rushing to the shore, everyone then started to pick up trashes in all kinds, sizes and shapes.

Since it was lowtide, everyone showed bravery as we went into the mangroves. Despite the idea of having snakes in the area, we just shrugged our shoulders and carried on with the task.

Frankly, we were quite unsure of what to feel. Trashes like wrappers, diapers, clothes, broken glasses and plates were found. What made us feel worse about ourselves were the feces found almost everywhere! How could human beings do all these? I was ashamed of myself. I was ashamed of the mankind.

Disgusted, we had to push through with cleaning the area. At least we tried to lessen the burden that we felt.

One trash after another, we did the cleaning for 5 hours and collected more than 10 sacks of trashes.

For once, on a fine summer time, we did not only enjoying the sea but also took care of it.

I personally believe that when something gives us happiness, we have to return the favor to that something. As for now, we SEAsed the day!

'Till next time,
Glenna 😘
