Growing vegetables. An interesting discovery. The “DEEP BED” method.

in #nature8 years ago (edited)

Growing vegetables is fascinating

and mydaughter’s little friend in the header will help us, showing something very interesting about growing vegetables. This is the simple experiment:

Sow the same seed, in the same soil, the same day (april fifth 2017), but with two different techniques.

The “just put it there” method of mine.  Up. The “DEEP BED” method of John Seymour. Down

Very surprising. More than DOUBLE the size.

Of course the “DEEP BED” method calls for more work in preparing the soil, but the difference is huge. Here the method summarise by his author:

"The essence of the deep bed method is to dig deeply and then never tread on the bed. This means your plants are growling in very loose, deeply dug soil; their roots will godown instead of sideways. You therefore get bigger plants, and can grow them closer together"*

So for people like me interested in distancing themselves from this crazy consumerist society, I highly recommend using this method. Because you can grow more vegetables using less surface, this is a very rewarding process for people living in big cities with very little outdoor space. I have found this information in an old book (1978). see sources for more information on the subject.

I KEEP LEARNING

I started doing raised beds so I wouldn't have to walk through the rows. Vegetables need lots of loose dirt.

What do you mean with raised beds? Thanks
