Sunflower from Very Close

Sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) is one type of flower that is widely known by many people.

Often used for various purposes, one of which is used can to produce oil and also as an ornamental plant.

Have unique physical features, yellow, large & large flower head (can reach diameter 30 cm).

In one bump, consisting of hundreds or even thousands of small flowers.

While the behavior, this flower can be seen from the way of growth that faces toward the sun, maybe because it is called sunflower flowers.

In the international world, this interest is claimed as the official interest of the states of Kansas, the United States and the national interest of the Ukrainian state.



Sunflower belongs to a kind of soft plant stems because it does not form wood.

Initially the sunflower is known to come from Mexico, has physical characteristics: 3m - 5m tall, depending on the species, the trunk of the tree there are rough hair and single leaf width.

Interestingly, the sunflower fruit is often called the 'seed' of sunflower, because it has the characteristics of dried fruit with a rather hard wall and difficult to distinguish the actual 'seed'.

Sunflower if based on cultivation group, divided into:

  • Flowers that become quartz by harvesting the seeds for use as a snack.

  • Flowers are made ornamental plants, which has the shape, color and variations of the most beautiful among other species are usually used for ornamental plants.
  • Flowers that produce oil (oil seed), taken from seeds. This type or group of flowers usually has thinner walls or shells with an oil content of between 48% and 52%.

This plant is often used as the main ingredient to produce oil, because it has a high enough oil content and also skin that tends to thin.

In terms of oil production, there are some of the most dominant countries, namely France, Russia, India and China.



The history of the sunflower


Since thousands of years ago, Indians in North America have cultivated this sunflower.

And after that, just spread to the Incas in South America.

After Europeans overwhelmed North America and South America, it spread to mainland Europe.

And increasingly spread again to the whole world around the 16th century.

A century later, the utilization of this plant is growing, as used as a substitute for chocolate and coffee or as a mixture of bread raw materials.

The spread of this plant also occurred around the 18th century, when Peter the Great (Pyotr I) of Russia, once he was in the Netherlands and see the beauty of this flower, so he took part in the spread of this plant in mainland Russia.

So after that, this plant grows extraordinarily in Russia.

An estimated 2 million hectares per year.

This flower is used as the main ingredient of sunflower seed oil and also to meet the needs of its inhabitants.
