Try to remember it next year. You can open those easily on front, top or bottom (different ways to build them). Then you just take out old nest etc. But it can be bit messy... Birds that do not migrate spend cold winter nights there and there is crap etc. There can also be eggs and sometimes dead chicks so I need to ask someone to take those pictures-don't want to touch camera with those cloves same time cleaning them.

ew....that would be gross.....ick. I didn't even think there'd be death inside - but of course. I've never had a bird box but figured they'd need to be cleaned out somehow - I even wondered if a shop vacuum would work....but not that high up :)
Luckily that's not so often, but every once and while. And also if they open from bottom or front you usually get everything out with one or two big peaces and that's it, but of course there are some exceptions. There are some birds that clean boxes themselves but they are bit bigger and need a bigger box with larger hole to go through. Those boxes are easier to make, when they don't have open up in any way.
