Duck, Duck, Super African Goose

in #nature7 years ago (edited)

The other day, I noticed an odd bird amongst the ducks. It was much larger, with a pronounced flap under its chin and a big ol' belly!

I was intrigued by it so I just took some pictures and videotaped the strange bird. The video is really cool too if you're into wildlife! During the video, you'll get to see him waddle around, vocalizing almost the whole time. When a plane flies overhead, you'll even get to see him poop. My husband and I are also intrigued and confused by the bird.

We spent a little more time with our buddy as he or she seemed very interested in being our friend and when I got home, I happily googled types of bird and found out my new buddy was a goose... a Super African Goose. Check out what I learned about him or her.

The flap under its chin called a dewlap. It's very pronounced. I learned that this bird is not native to Texas, so maybe someone purchased him for this particular neighborhood pond. If you watched the video, you can hear some construction in the background because of the rebuilding efforts after the flood. Either way, whether or not he was lost, he certainly has found friends with the ducks. The ducks really embraced the goose.

When my husband saw me researching the goose, he said, "Oh no! Are we going to end up with Super African Geese waddling around our yard?!"

So, because of a thought-provoking question from @alvinauh, I dug a little deeper and realize that the single Super African Goose is the perfect guard for my future alpaca herd!

So to my dear husband,"Yes, we will end up with a Super African Goose waddling around in our yard." Thanks again, @alvinauh!

Looks cool, are they bred for guarding? Eating or other purposes? First time seeing this.

That's a great question. Apparently, the Super African Geese is one of the best guard geese. It's only a good guard if its single. If there are other geese, then, they bond with each other instead of focusing on protecting the other farm animals.

@alvinauh, Such a great question, I edited the main body to do a shout out to you! tip! 0.5

Awesome to see you posting again :) Almost thought You got tired of us ? Jk

"Super African Geese waddling around our yard?!" Lol hehe

Never!!! Can't get rid of me if you tried! BTW, I'm practicing my Mandarin every day! I told my mom whenever she talks to me, she can only speak Mandarin.

That's awesome that you are studying Mandarin ! How is it going ?

Okay, except my mom accidentally throws in Taiwanese all the time but I know when she makes a mistake and she fixes it by repeating it in Mandarin. Also, any good Netflix series in Chinese that would be good for me to listen to at night when I'm sleeping?

Hahah lol. I actually don't watch any Chinese television I am afraid. It's not my cup of tea.

Super African Goose! That's a really funny name. I feel that can be a video game character or something. Hop hop hop....

That's right! I'm thinking a superhero in a warped world! hehehe

He/she is super fantastic! It is always interesting to me when animals accept an animal who is unlike them into their flock/pack. A group of geese is caked a gaggle :)

I know! So cute! They were obviously really bonded to each other. Is a group of ducks also called a gaggle? I'll have to google that one. :) Just googled... flock of ducks.

And, I just read that it's not a flock of seagulls but a colony of seagulls. LOL.

I got super curious one time and googled a ton to figure out what all the different groups were called...interesting and fun

That's fun. The I idea of a guard goose haha. Very cool. It looks cozy and warm in the video. It's kinda brrr here in ri

You better bundle up! I can't even imagine. Yes... brrrr! And, thanks so much for all you did to help me today!

Questions ... I have questions!! Are these your ducks? Is this in your yard? (You talk about getting "back home" ... so is this at a neighborhood park or something?) Is this a wild goose? Did he just appear out of nowhere? (And if he's in your yard, how did he get there?)

Hey E! LOL. No, these are not my ducks. It's just in a neighborhood park. And, I have no idea if how the goose got there. My guess is someone bought him to protect the ducks. Either that or he got lost and ended up finding new friends. hehehe
