Last weekend my brother and i took a short trip to a famous fly-fishing river in Austria.
The River is called Traun, it has his source in the Austrian Alps area from where it finds it way to eventually merge into the Donau river in the Austrian town Linz.
We drove about 7 hours from Germany to a small Austrian town called Laakirchen where we arrived in the evening
Our hotel was about 500 meters distance to the river and a well known hotel in the fly-fishing scene. It is decorated with all sorts of fishing equipment, fishing Pictures and fish trophy's
They also have a great restaurant where we enjoyed some good local food and a couple of nice Austrian beer this evening
Next Morning we get up early to start fishing, we went directly from the hotel to the nearest spot
It was very impressive to see this river for the first time
The Water is clear an fresh with a greenish touch
The current is very strong there and you have to be very careful to not fall and get washed away
I was not aware how strong this river is as it was my first time there. So i went right in and i took little steps to get more to the middle. At one point the water was suddenly hip high and pressing strong. I felt a bit uncomfortable and tried to get back to the river bank. The surface of the river is mostly stones they can be quite slippery and unexpected deepening in the ground can be everywhere. Fortunately i made it back save but it was scary. From this point on i was more careful!
We made our little base on a small peninsula and started fishing
i caught a crayfish and some smaller trouts
But one was even about 40 centimetres! I used a dry very small swimming fly
In between we had a little break and made some good coffee and enjoying the nature
we continued fishing for a while
A couple of ours later it grew darker and we were pretty tired so we called it a day
But before we left, i took some last pictures of this beautiful place
That was the end of the first day and my first time at the Traun. I can tell you, it is worth visiting! Especially if you are into fishing! But it is also great for hiking and allot more outdoor activity's. You can also book snorkeling tours in the river which must be awesome! The nature here is stunning and i was surprised how clean everything was! Austrians are taking good care of their nature.
I hope you liked my pictures and get a small impression of my experience
See you soon!
