Herpetology is the branch of zoology that focuses on reptiles and amphibians. Herping is the act of looking for reptiles and amphibians.
For some reason reptiles and amphibians have fascinated me since my early days. You can tell from my posts that frogs, turtles, snakes, and salamanders are all creatures that excited and impress me, so periodically I go out looking for them.
I often encounter them anyway, but when you go out looking for them, you seem to find even more. Also, at night, things are very different. Down at the lake shore, many reptiles and amphibians can be easier to locate and capture, so last night I took Red-Pepper with me to go have a look. Here's the video that we made. If you've ever wondered how I capture some of these creatures, this video will show you how.

Nice catch!...:)...
before looking more closely initially I thought your post was titled herpes at night. was wondering what you'd been up to @papa-pepper lol
Oh no!
Not sure people should be handling wildlife needlessly (/encouraging others to) but maybe nature is a plaything of mankind and little more?
Hmmm...
I suppose if it helps people take conservation seriously (ie. your children) then maybe it's not the worst thing in the world but surely nature hardly needs manhandling unless you intend to kill things for food / self-preservation?
Nice pictures all the same. It's just if everybody goes and does this, there'll be a lot of nature stressed-out unnecessarily.
Of course, I guess you're damned if you do / damned if you don't should you live in areas where dangerous nature abounds. I'm sure you'll know what you're doing and I don't mean to cause offence.
Good points, and I guess you can be glad that "my kind" are few and far between. It's just something I've always enjoyed, and haven't stopped yet, but I do get your point.
Hahahaha what amaze me more? That adorable kid youre with! Lucky her.

Fantastic Video with you and your daughter Herping
A daughter who hunts for snakes in the dark without screaming. You must be doing something right! Unfortunately for me now I am more scared of the dark then ever.
Yeah, sure, at night as well, why don't you. I'm still unconvinced snakes are nice 8-).
I have been searching this lake for two weeks looking for snakes. I will try at night. There are beautiful bull snakes here and probably water snakes. Wish me luck.
Very cool! I'd love to meet a Bull Snake one day!

he is very brave, I like to see courage in a girl, but still have to be careful.
Yes, still have to be careful.
yes, that's the first thing to note.
I'd say that was a successful trip down to the lake! Red-Pepper sure is a brave girl! I don't know many that would get that close to a snake let alone pick it up! Kudos to her!
