Roads of Costa Rica: drive carefully and watch out for the sloths! (cute sloth photos inside :))

in #nature7 years ago (edited)

Hey there my Steemit friends!

Today´s theme for the #smartphonephotography contest hosted by @juliank, is “roads” and I decided to use some of my Costa Rican shots for this category as it was in this Central American country where I saw what easily might be one of the most beautiful and scenic roads in the world. The reason is simple – most roads in Costa Rica lead through stunningly beautiful nature that is brimming with all kinds of wildlife.

However, driving through such a breathtaking and pristine wilderness comes with some responsibility. Considering the enormous abundance of wild animals living there, drivers must be very careful when navigating local roads not to hit creatures crossing them.

Out of all the potential victims of irresponsible driving, it is the sloths, the iconic Costa Rican animals, that are at the greatest risk of being hit as they are extremely slow movers. Sloths spend most of their lives in trees but they do descend to the ground, usually for two reasons – to defecate or to switch for another tree.

When on the ground, the sloth is very vulnerable and it has no chance to avoid an approaching car. Therefore, it is always the driver who decides whether these defenseless furry guys make it safely to the other side of the road or not.

When going to the Gandoca Manzanillo National Park with our guide, we also came across a sloth desperately (but clumsily) trying to get to the other side of the road. When our guide saw the poor guy, he pulled over immediately, get out of the car, grabbed the little fella gently by his back and move it to trees on the other side of the road safely.

Unfortunately, not all sloths are that lucky so please drive responsibly and watch out for them (and for other animals too of course) when driving in Costa Rica.

As usually, all photos featured in this post were taken by me. The first one is my entry for the #smartphonephotography contest.

That sky is amazing!

First picture is awesome! Makes me want to get lost on back roads of Costa Rica and explore the jungle. Sloths are curious creatures, but I don’t understand the pop culture fascination with them.

Thanks! I didnt really know what to think about sloths until I met them literally face to face in the Costa Rican jungle. I fell in love with them immediately! They are just so adorable and unique! I will never forget the smiling, yet very curious look of the little guy who was staring at me from some two feet distance :)

They’re so cute!

They are adorable!

Wow...amazing animal photography post.

Incredible photos of birds from around the world.

Awww I think I really need to travel to Costa Rica only to see these adorable animals :)

I am sure you will find your way there too soon or later ;) The biodiversity is just stunning there. Its like one big zoo except the animals live feely in their natural environment :)

Now I really want to go :)

Hmm could you point out some introduction of yours here on Steemit? I've scrolled all the way down to ur beginnings half a year ago but haven't found any introduction post. I'm just interested to see ur way of becoming a nomad etc...I hope to try it out on my uwn in the upcoming years and it'd be cool to see how you managed it. Thx!

Tady přes cestu přebíhají převážně srnky, zajíci a bažanti. A to je člověku taky líto, když vidí nějakého rozpláclého.

Jo, to máš samozřejmě pravdu, každého přejetého zvířátka škoda...

Sloths are very interesting animals! :)..What's the orange black thing on the sloths back in the second picture?

Thats a good question :) It is a colored marking that males of the species develop once they are adult but nobody really knows what for :)

Whaat! That's random! :D..Maybe they develop it to charm the females?

Yeah thats one of the possible explanations... but on the other hand, the striking coloration of the patch also attracts predators (mostly eagles and jaguars) so it really is a kind of mystery :)

The animal kingdom never cease to amaze! :)

Exactly :)

Great pics, I've been through Central and South America but never been lucky enough get such a closeup view of a sloth.

We had one living on a tree right in front of our airbnb bunk we rented there :) So we just had to wait until the little fella came down to say hi :) it was a truly unforgettable experience.

Interesting blog. I never saw a sloth before & amazed by how big it is. 😀

Thank you :) yeah, they are actually pretty big :)

U should visit Sabah, Malaysia. U can discovered many types of animals here😁
