Wildlife of the Caribbean: golden silk orb weaver aka the banana spider

in #nature7 years ago (edited)

Hi Steemians!

Let me introduce you to another interesting creature that is commonly found in the tropical forests here in the Caribbean, the golden silk orb weaver, colloquially known as the banana spider.

The banana spider is a genus of large tropical spiders with many species native to not only Central America but also most other tropical regions all over the world.

The banana spiders vary greatly in size and coloration but there is one thing all species have in common – they all weave giant, impressive webs.

The banana spiders are also famous for being fierce predators, capable of catching and eating prey larger than themselves. They are known to have killed even birds and little snakes.

If I had known all of that when I was taking this close-up of the banana spider in a Costa Rican jungle last year, the photo would have been much more blurry I think :D

Fortunately, I managed to keep my hands pretty steady in that moment so I can now use this shot as my entry for today´s #animalphotography contest organized by @juliank and @photocontests.

Už tak mě tenhle druh pavouka dost děsí - a on umí ještě k tomu ulovit hada?

wow! Fantastic macro!

Thanks Melinda! :) (and thanks for picking my vehicle shadow shot as one of the winners too! :)

Oh my God, I couldn't ever take a photo like this. I really don't like spiders. not even the little ones. But it is a great shot, so congrats, you just made something great with a camera.

Haha, thank you :) Honestly, I was not very comfortable when taking this photo :D

Birds and snakes? WOW! I see this spider here everywhere, and you know, I always wondered whether they would be dangerous to humans =) I guess this answers my question =)

Actually, the species that have been recorderd to eat birds and snakes are from Asia so I dont know if these Central American banana spiders can do that too :) But the ones I saw in Costa Rica were really huge so I believe they would make it too :D

Pěkná potvůrka ;-). Ještě že u nás zatím nic takového volně nežije ;-)

To jo no :) Jako kouká se na ně hezky, ale z boty bych je vyklepávat nechtěl :D

;-). Tohle vidět dcerunka, tak ji Týden nevidím ;-)

Yikes! I guess it's poisonous? :x .. Big webs you say..Do you have any photo of it? :D

Actually, I do but the web is not very visible in the photo so it only adds to the creepiness :D See for yourself:

Omg, that spider is huge! Imagine to walk straight into the spider web with your face! :X

This is exactly what almost happened to us several times :D Costa Rican jungles are full of these webs :)

YAY! Now I wanna go to Costa Rica! ;D

The spider of bananas is beautiful for all its color, I congratulate you for your courage to take this picture, I say that I suffer from arachnophobia JaJaJa; Thank you for sharing.

Haha, thanks... nothing fancy for the arachnophobs though :D

Fuuh no je rozkošný, ale po větě o lovení ptáka ... no co si budem i před ní, bych hodně rychle utíkala před tímto tvorečkem :D

Chápu :) V tomto případě by ses neměla za co stydět, tvůj strach by byl oprávněný :D

The spider certainly has a banana yellow color. There are some really poisonous and dangerous spiders that can harm even humans.. and this one looks like one of them. Is there any information whether they can harm humans in case of a bite ? Either way, really cool photo Phortun.

Thank you for contributing to the Steemit Community.Keep up the great work and I'm looking forward to your next posts.

They are poisonous but their venom is usually harmless to humans ;)
