Water covers about 70% of Earth’s surface and it makes up about 70% of out bodies, so it’s easy to see that it as common as it is special. It is actually one of the most common substances in the Universe, second only to hydrogen. That means you will there is a high chance to find a water molecule wherever you go, in the inner or outer space.
In the Universe, most of the water appears as a byproduct of star formation. Pretty much like gas coming out of your car’s exhaust pipe. In 2011, two teams of astronomers from NASA have discovered the largest reservoir of water ever detected, equivalent to 140 trillion times the water in all oceans combined.
Not much has changed since the dinosaurs
In other words, we now drink the same water dinosaurs did. Perhaps the same water in which life itself appeared.
“Water can be polluted, abused, and misused but it is neither created nor destroyed, it only migrates.” (Water, Marq de Villiers )
This is possible because Earth’s hydrosphere is a closed system, meaning nothing goes in or out. Of course, minor amounts of water have managed to escape the atmosphere, like water on board of space rockets for example, and also some amounts came into the atmosphere in the form of ice on meteors, but they represent no more than a drop in the ocean.
