This morning, looking at the overcast sky with lightning and thunder, I felt the air smell like rain. I smell the rain) Who does not like to get some fresh air after the rain? I think there are almost no such. I was wondering why people like this smell. People do not like the rain, but the smell after it.
It turns out people like not only this smell. There are several more that are associated with precipitation and also impress the person.
One of the smells is called petricor. It appears after it rains after a prolonged drought.
In fact, it's not just rain, it's a chemical reaction, which comes from the fact that during a drought, many plants secrete their oils, which later react with the rain. It is the vapors released in this reaction that create a pleasant aroma that people like so much.
There are other smells associated with these precipitation. It turns out that soil bacteria can also react with rain. This leads to a derivative, in our case to the smell of rain.
Well, and the smell of ozone. It is he who is primarily associated with rain. All this happens because the thunderstorm splits hydrogen and nitrogen in the atmosphere, which later interact with each other and form nitric oxide. Then he enters into chemical reactions with substances that are present in the air, which eventually leads to a pleasant sharp smell, that is, to ozone. A whole story, a pleasant story. Enjoy the smell of rain)
