The movement of crustal plates can cause mountains to form in three ways. One way is when two plates collide. When this happens, the crust is bent and squeezed. Squeezing causes the layers of rock to fold. These folded rocks form folded mountains. The Appalachian Mountains in the eastern United States are folded mountains. The Alps. in Europe and the Himalayas in Asia are also folded mountains.
Magma may force its way under layers of rock. It pushes in between the layers, and bends the layers above. This action in the crust causes dome-shaped mountains. Stone mountains near Atlanta, Georgia, is a dome-shaped mountain.
