cherry trees for Washington DC in 1912. The first tree itself was given 2 years earlier from Tokyo City. But the tree was affected by the disease and eventually felled. Then in 1929, First Lady Helen Herron Taft began planting cherry trees. Until then 3,000 trees from Japan were also planted in Washington DC. The Japanese prize covers 12 tree species, but now there are two that dominate, Toshino and Kwanzan.
