Fur seals are quite an adorable marine mammal when you have the opportunity to watch them on videos or admire them from a distance in person. The reason for the required distance when admiring them in person is because actually they are kind of jerks...
Well, I suppose jerks could be a bit harsh of a term to use but allow me to explain. During the early time of the season, around November and December these animals are in breeding mode. This basically means that males, whom are aggressive, are constantly fighting and trying to dominant all other males in an area in order to gain access to more females.
This aggression can quite easily be focused on humans that happen to walk near or into a dominant male's territory. The key to remain safe whilst in fur seal territory is to walk in pairs or more, make yourself look big and noisy if they take an interest in you and finally, never run, always hold your ground.
After acknowledging and mastering these small aspects of behaviour you have countless opportunities to observe and photograph these little jerks, which are quite adorable and photogenic.
