Amongst the most historied and relentless lands in the world, the sahara -- the Arabic word for "desert" -- elicits a poignant sense of time and the power of nature, of antiquity and legend, of wonder and mystery.
There are several deserts in the world, ranging from the most beautiful to the largest and the hottest as well. The Sahara Desert has been recorded to be the largest desert that falls into a sub-tropical climate (the Hot largest Desert in the world). It covers most of northeastern Africa which is about 10% of the continent. It is nearly as large as the United States in terms of land. It is basically rated the 3rdlargest desert after Antarctica and the Arctic though its quite expansive. The Sahara extends from the Atlantic Ocean in the west to the Mediterranean in the north to the Red Sea in the east. There are 10-11 countries in Africa that have some part of their nation in the Sahara desert.
THE BEAUTY OF SAHARA
Sahara is known to have the largest sand dunes in the worldits other topographical features such as arid mountains, plateaus, sand and gravel covered plains, shallow basins and other large oasis depression according to "The Living Africa".
How the sand dunes came about has been quite a puzzle to solve but going by the geographical pathways, there would probably originate from:
1_A topography such as rocks and shrubs obstructing the wind force thereby resulting in piled up sands and later large dunes.
2_An abundant supply of loose sand in a region generally devoid of vegetation (such as an ancient lake bed or river delta) as the desert is surrounded by Mediterranean sea to the north and the Atlantic ocean the other end.
3_A wind energy source sufficient to move the sand grains giving rise to different dunes with different colors depending on location and source.
