RE: A study of mesopelagic fish found that 73 % of them had plastic in their gut!

Surprised by the fact that Niger River is responsible for 95% plastic pollution in sea...

Oh, no, it's not! What I tried to say is that 10 big rivers is responsible for 95 %, and Niger River is one of these ten.

Research should must be focused on making biodegradable cost effective plastics...
Also a little funding and pressure on third world countries is required, to make them cut down their plastic production and do more recycling.

I completely agree. We need both better and more affordable technology, along with education about the problems to the poor countries who do a lot of the plastic pollution.

Sort:

Yet Niger is one of the biggest river and it is indeed must be responsible to a large extent. ..
I live within 10 miles of indus river and I can feel it being poluted by garbage every day.

Do you see a lot of plastic in the river banks of indus river as well?

Yeah, I caught a small freshwater turtle trapped in a plastic bag some time ago...
I took him home, gave him a bath(he was covered with mud and debris from plastic bag) and released him in the river again...
I will make a post about it and send you the link and I will sure make a reference to your post about plastic contamination...
